Default Rust on the inside steering shaft?

As you can see in the picture below, there is rust on the joint..
I have two idential 2008 LS 600 HLs. Only one has rust on the joint. Both have rust on the bracket on the left..
It seems unusual that Lexus would have rusted parts on the inside, so quickly.

None of us would think of checking it. The location is above the accellerator pedal, under the steering. I saw it accidentally, because someone asked me to take a picture of the two buttons in that location (one turns pcs off and other is for TPMS).

Wondering if anyone else has rust in the same locations.

Here is the link to the picture

Yeah I saw that when I looked at your pic. It look like someone used a heavy degreaser when they detailed your interior or cleaned the carpets. That's what I was thinking.

surface rust correct? depends on the material used, can put some stop rust on it or never dull it.

probably (CLR) there are others that you can find in walmart, nothing that will stop rust. but something that will neutralize it.

looks like its not coated with grease or oil. Most likely its not stainless steel either. Just surface rust. Unfinished metal would do that over time. oxidation of steel.

I would CLR or rust converter or leave it alone.

i had someone sand it down and oil it. It looks perfect now.. It was just surface rust.. as someone said, probably from detergents of carpet cleaning.. Even then, I am some what surprised.. lexus should be using better metal!

limited choices as you want it to be strong yet lightweight, unless it is polished then cleared aint much can be done as iron and steel will get surface rust but will not affect the integrity.
