Strange differential noise with video
I put my '02 UL on the lift to replace the driver's side hub assembly since the bearing was bad. During inspection my mechanic friend and I noticed what seemed like an abnormal knocking in the differential. Placing a hand or stethoscope on the case, there was a very clear knocking present with the car in drive and rear wheels turning at a high engine idle speed. The frequency of the knocking was about 200bpm, or multiple knocks per second. The stethoscope revealed a lot of chatter in the area of the bearings where the half-shafts come out of the diff. We immobilized one wheel at a time and found that when the passenger's side wheel was in motion, the noise was very loud, and the frequency of the knocking was greatly increased. I know these diffs are virtually problem-free but in all seriousness this vibration and noise did not sound right. I ended up replacing the bad driver's side bearing as planned and got the car back on the road, and it sounds fine. I do not and have not ever heard any noise from the rear end with the exception of the recent whine I got from the bad hub. Here's a video, any suggestions?
