Default question about non air shocks

when my car had 85,000 miles I was told that my rt. rear shock was leaking and the dealer ordered the part and replaced 1 shock for about $400. now with 95,000 miles I has been told that my rt. front shock has leaked out and need replace and alignment. I am terrified of another $400 shock and ??? alignment. so go to independent shop and go with unknown quality shocks or let the dealer have their way with my wallet again. my question is why only 1 shock at the dealer when it seems to me most recommend replacing in pairs. and any info about aftermarket shocks

KYB is the OEM manufacturer. You can get them from RockAuto or similar for about $100. It's best to replace all 4 at the same time.

You can go aftermarket or just do the 2 front shocks at the same time so you can avoid being sold the other shock in the future. They should usually be replaced in pairs as well. If not all 4 at once.

To all experts: Would you recommend replacing the springs as well?

No reason to replace the coil springs unless you are trying to lower or put on a sportier suspension.
