I Used to have a 2005 LS430 UL and GS400 both with OEM navi. I hated the fact that it couldn't be used while driving. I know it is a safety feature, but front passengers can't even use it to assist the driver, or enter addresses on the fly without having to always pull over. When I had my 2000 GS400 with OEM navi, I inquired at my local dealer about upgrading it to new maps and was told that the most recent upgrade was already three years old and no future updates were going to be released (last release was in 2005, I inquired in 2008). I then changed the Oem navi unit with a non-navi HVAC controls and kenwood double din.
After my UL LS430 got stolen, I replaced it with a non- navi LS430 this time around and plan on going with Pioneer NEX navi and beat sonic kit, just because it is easily upgradable / customizable and can be used while driving. I now only buy cars without OEM navi.

This isn't an easy or obvious choice. The factory Nav is a bit clunkier but is well integrated with steering wheel controls and provides easier to use Climate and Sound controls.
The aftermarket units like Pioneer have a very nice interface but integration is more problematic, your costs will be higher (you have to buy and install all this electronics) and the resale number will be lower.
Perfect, stock and loaded cars sell the best and for the most - everyone in line behind that. You would end up in the price and value line just above the base models getting maybe 10% to 20% of your costs back but you'll enjoy using the Nav more and get better routing.

The navigation in these cars is laughably outdated, I hoped to buy a car that didn't have it, but most of them do. Fortunately the iphone rests nicely in the navigation screen area

I have the stock navigation on my 05. I updated the map data DVD in the trunk to 2016 maps. Works quite well. On the downside the bluetooth connection to my phone is touch and go. Having nav in the car will allow you to upgrade to Grom Vline kit. This will give you google maps and and a good bluetooth phone connection.

I can confirm that the reliability of the OEM unit is outstanding! True, your updates to the most recent maps are limited but it’s factory and does the job! I have my car 11 years with a 20 year old car. No issues! I’m not a fan of playing with electronics on an older car. FYI... As previously mentioned.... keeping moisture out of your trunk will preserve your reader for the disc and you should’ be good a long time. Besides, the Prius uses the same reader and is cheap. Good luck.
