"S-Drive" doesn't display

2004 LS...just noticed that when I shift into S-mode, the dash display remains in "D", rather than displaying the usual "S". It seems that the expected downshift doesn't happen, either. Is this just a switch problem or something BIGGER...anyone have this happen?
