Warm - agree all the technology in today's cars (regular and hybrid) makes them generally reliable but when something goes wrong its costs serious $$$.

After 10 reliable years, I had to get rid of my 89 Acura Legend in 1999 because the ABS master cylinder/accumulator went out and just the parts was $2500. ...to repair just a part of the brakes - yikes. I have owned several cars as a young man that cost me less than $2500 to buy the entire car.

JW-The 89 legend was a nice car in its day I almost bought one blue with the gray rockers. 2500 bucks for parts for brakes is a serious reminder of the catastrophic cost of technology.

I bought the Camry for $19 G put a G into the warrantee 8/100 k and sold it at 80-85 with a transferable warrantee for like $11,000 7 years old I am probably ahead of the game. Thats 1500.00 a year (guaranteed) to drive a decent comfortable efficient car plus a home equity loan, and ya miss the t belt if it has one. Now I have some cash for autos versus my first car my 67 Impala for 400 bucks that is probably the route I will pursue. I bet I will never own a new car, so what.

Warm - I agree on not buying new cars. 3-4 years old and in great condition seems to be the sweet spot in terms of reasonable cost of ownership. And if you buy a warranty you are covered in case you get one with unexpected mechanical issues.

My next car is very likely to be an 2009 SC430 - probably will buy it in 2012-13. Will try to get an ultra low mile CPO car from Lexus if we can find one at the time. I love the LS430 I have now but I really don't need a big 4 door sedan any more and we would enjoy a convertible in the spring and fall down here.

JW- I agree I bought my 04 premium 3 years ago in October with 55 k and all the receipts chrome wheels for 17 G's. Ya just gotta look for a while. The SC430 sounds very tempting, I would like to drive one, my old chiropractor had one along with his Bentley. It is an idea to keep an eye on trends and pick up the luxury/niche cars that are for any reason trending down at the time for cheap.

We never did hear back from the original poster?
