Default LS430 w/NAV, How can you test factory amp?

I have been googling and searching this forum for 2 days now, but i cant find an answer.

How do you test a factory amplifier for a 2001 LS430 w/NAV/MarkLevinson ??

problem - door speakers have no bass and sound kind of weak, also the sub is not working at all.

When the amp went bad in my '01 LS430 UL the radio stopped working completely. I have heard that it is common for the subwoofer to go out, and that will effect the performance of the other speakers. I don't have personal experience with speaker problems. Replacing the amp fixed my ML system.

thats exactly whats going on with the system.

sub completely out and speakers sound like they are out of an old FORD.

Actually, my 93 Ford Taurus Police package has surprisingly good speakers. Of-course I changed the radio to a modern CD/MP3 player and speakers awakened - literally. And then I amplified them - they sound great.

I had the same prob. with my LS, but not only Sub was out, front door speakers were ripped. I changed fronts to 6.5in Infinity Reference and Sub to JL 8W0-8 and my system started to shut down when volume was high. So I put an amp just for Sub and it's all good now.

^^ the system was shutting down because sub was not compatible with the factory amp. i forgot exactly what makes it not work. its something with the resistance going through the sub i think.

but my problem is all factory stereo. and im trying to figure out if its a bad amp or bad speakers. before i start dropping $$$ into the wrong thing

It was shutting down because system was overheating. The impedance was correct on the sub. Amp could not handle more power that front speakers + sub put out.

You can start by replacing the sub to something similar to stock since it's not working completely and see how system works. May be it's all you need.
Good Luck.

Check into having the sub repaired. It can be made to sound new for far less than a new ML sub. Replacing with another brand can have its own issues.

Are these amp/radio problems most prevalent with the LS430s that have Nav? Or all the early LS430s?

How many miles on your car? I'm looking at a 2001 LS430 with 100k and will be crossing my fingers. Is it possible for the Nav/ML units to keep going even after many miles or do they all eventually take a crap? That would make a good thread. "How many miles on your LS430 with Nav/ML before it died"? If it is still working please acknowledge.

83000kms = 51500 miles on my car.

I had a buzzing noise from the rear tray which I thought was the sub, but it was actually one of the 4 pegs for the subwoofer cover that ended up on the metal rear tray. It buzzed on certain bass notes at certain volumes.

I did take the sub out anyway and visually inspected it, appeared to be in pretty good condition. I also watched it carefully while it was fully bolted in, playing loud music. Since the peg is gone, no more buzzing. If the bass is really strong, the rear sunshade buzzes a bit. The rear sunshade is only available on the Ultra Luxury models.

My rear subwoofer is buzzing like crazy, but all the speakers in my system are working. I need to find a shop that is willing to repair my subwoofer. I'm hoping that by hearing it they can give me a price for a repair.

To answer the original question: You need the 2001 LS430 EWD (electrical wiring diagram) for the audio system. Someone who has a subscription to techinfo.toyota.com could get the PDF file for you. I don't have one..
