Has anyone tried Lucas fuel injector cleaner to improve fuel economy?
My car is an 04 with 160k on it and it runs very well. I have read in so many threads people getting mid 20's for fuel economy. I drive like a gram-pa and I am barely squeezing 20mpg on the highway. I never add products to my tank....but I am thinking this might be the time to start. Has anyone had any success with Lucas or a product like it? Do u think I will get a few for mpg?
Thanks

The testing Lexus ran for the EPA’s prescribed test schedules for the LS 430 was on dynos. The reason no one really gets mid 20s is because we all actually drive in the real world.
(The EPA did change testing requirements in 2008. Under the new rules, mpg actually may be pretty close to the window sticker.)
When driving down the road at 58 mph and 1800 rpm I show over 30 mpg. And, I know I get 25+ when driving at a steady speed without stopping, slowing down, re-accelerating, etc. and etc. And I do get mid 20's driving the 15 miles from the gas station to home at 3 am when no other vehicles are on the road and I catch every green light. Even though have to start from 0 mph. But, in the real world there is stopping, slowing down, re-accelerating, etc. and etc.
Anyone claiming to average mid 20s with an LS 430 in the real world in various driving conditions, like when pulling off the highway to stop for fuel, and etc. is sadly full of schiff.

I agree on the "mid 20's" thing being a mirage. I get 19-20 with both premium and regular around town, which means mostly flat 45 mph roads with long lights (central FL).
Highway, I tend to go 70 and have gotten up to 28 mpg in the summer.

fuel economy for a fleet of cars of the same make/model will follow a bell curve, as seen in the Fuelly link: 117 cars with mpg data for over 2.2 million miles of real world driving. While the average is 21, there are 12 cars getting 25 or better on average. That is no mirage or BS. Those cars probably aren't used much for city stop 'n go driving. Maybe using Lucas too, who knows.

My "mirage" comment was really about an average fuel economy that isn't all highway driving. It looks like the OP was talking about highway economy though, and I would say his highway economy should be better than 20mpg.

ok let me clear up my question. I only drive my LS for road trips or going out to dinner. My daily driver gets all the miles. I am not using any fancy way to calculate my mileage other than the digital read out on the dash. I believe the gauge says avg mpg.....and I really watch the gauge on my 4 hour road trip to PA. When I pull into the in laws house 4 hours away mostly all on the highway that gauge reads 19.9 or 20.0 max............I seem to remember it used to get me 22.....but I cant get there anymore. So if Lucas wont do any harm I was thinking maybe I could improve my MPG

I use Lucas fuel system cleaner in a full tank of gas 3-4 times a year. I buy it by the gallon on Amazon. Car has 124 k miles on it.
My long term average mileage per tank is 21.3 over many tanks of gas with a mix of 60/40 small town short trip and highway driving. That multi-tank average mpg has remained pretty consistent for the last 10 years. On long road trips I have gotten a few tanks right around 27 mpg per tank running 93 premium, and about 1-2 mpg less using regular. I drive my car gently but not slowly - typically running 5-10 over posted speed limit.

Ya see.......as I read your post I am like bingo....he gets 21mpg......then you toss that 27mpg at me. Are you saying that the gauge on your dash reads 27 after a trip or that you are calculating mpg from a full tank to a fill up? Since we all have the same MPG gauge I would like to keep this thread to what we are seeing on the dash gauge. I drive very conservative in my LS....I get frustrated that my mpg isnt going over 20 so yes I will goose the ole gal on the highway. I always tell the wife how important it is to blow out all the carbon. I do believe that it is good to exercise the engine is a full range which I try to do.

On a 4 hour hwy drive I will get upper 20's if all I am doing is on off ramps for beer and gas, lol. No seriously you should be getting upper mid 20's also try c foam but I dont really think anything is going to bump your mileage up to 26 plus. I drive 80/20 with mine and sport more around town in my touareg and really 23.6 comes up a bunch I live in a rural area rarely see bumper to bumper traffic unless its back and forth to Packer games or down to Milwaukee. It is going down a touch as I am about to hit 200k.

I check my mileage using the car’s trip meter as well as calculation at pump. I find that my calculation is approximately .4-.5 mpg less than the car’s trip meter. FYI with almost all city driving I get around 14 mpg if I don’t push it hard. I almost never do highway but recently got around 20 mpg combined with 1/3 city driving. I do push it on the highway doing 80 mph often. I’ve resigned to the fact that my 2001 with a 5sp trans is thirsty.... Period. No way around it.

To jpv774, I would say if your mpg gauge is only showing around 20 on the highway after a long drive (assuming things like no substantial elevation gain, no serious headwind, etc.), I would check a few things like air filter clean? tires fully inflated? cleaned the MAF sensor? when was your last plug change? brakes dragging? etc. Are your tires winter-type, with high rolling resistance? That can have a significant impact.
My gauge regularly shows 24-27 mpg after a 50 mile trip at speeds 50-65 with 5-10 miles of in-town traffic with a couple of stoplights thrown in. I have done this exact same trip many many times and it is always the same. {the difference is probably due to ambient conditions, e.g., wind, and whether I hit the lights green or not, and number of passengers.) At half a tank I am usually around 250-260 miles, right now 320 and halfway between 1/2 tank and 1/4. Current tank avg. 23.4. Long term average: 24.0. This is average/mixed driving, 80/20 highway. Premium gas. No "Italian tuneups", engine rarely sees > 2,000 rpms.
When I switched to new Pirelli PZero All season tires I lost 1-2 mpg on the highway.

I think you're viewing the wrong MPG screen. Scroll that menu/screen to show TANK AVG MPG! If you're doing mostly highway driving, you should EASILY be reading over 22MPG on the car's calculated readout, unless your tires are really underinflated and you're towing a camper.
