Default smashed windshield

A couple of days ago, someone knocked on my door and told me that my windshield was broken. I ran outside down the stairs and found that someone had used a leg of a chair to smash my front windshield. This is the second time that someone smashed on of my windows. The first time was at the 10th St. parking garage at SJSU when someone hit my rear driver's side window and cracked the outer pane of the window. I live in downtown San Jose, so I know cars are at risk in my area, but I did not expect anyone to just walk into an apartment complex parking lot just to smash a windshield at night. They didn't steal anything from the car, just broke my front windshield. I called Lexus of Stevens Creek in Santa Clara to get a quote on how much parts would cost and nearly passed out. The windshield alone is $1700, and with all the moldings and clips the total would be $2100 and with labor it would cost $2300. Does anyone have any ideas of where to go for a cheap windshield replacement in or near San Jose?

Okay, take a deep breath. True, Lexus glass is stupid-expensive, but if you have even marginal car insurance, you should be covered, and it should not increase your rates. Mine paid for my windshield, less a $250.00 ded. $1800.00 Lexus windshield= $250.00

Also, maybe you need to move, SERIOUSLY !!!

Haters are everywhere... find a cheap garage somewhere and park your baby indoors. Other than that... it's gonna happen.

We have Geico in my household, and they have a $0 deductible on glass coverage. A kid down the street hit a baseball through the rear window of my civic 3 weeks after i got it, Geico had a mobile glass replacement service there the next day. The glass along with the rear defroster was replaced, and a week later i recieved a check in the mail for $100 so i could have my tint on my rear window redone. Talk about service!

I second finding out what you deductible is. I purposely have a low deductible ($100), for my coverage of windshield and comprehensive. Collision at $500. I'm pay like $200 more a year than higher limits but I have a better piece of mind at night.

For your car, how about putting a cover on it so people don't know what it is if you do have to park in your area?

Sorry about your winshield. I live nearby... Los Gatos. I recently had my winshield replaced due to a rock chip. I called my insurance company and they had a preferred list of vendors. They came out to the office and replaced the winshield in an hour and I also received a discount for being a AAA member. I think it ended up costing me 90.00 our of pocket plus tipped the guy 20.00.

My experience with AAA was a little different. A few years ago, I had 2 windhields replaced under warranty about a year apart. My rates popped up $500. When I called, they outright admitted it was due to the claims. They said that even though I had paid them over $40,000 in 25 years without any substantial claims, I was now an "increased risk". With that said, it may be OK if this is your first claim. Insurance companies really hate glass claims. They would much rather you take care of it on your own. Most PPG replacement glass is only a few hundred dollars installed. Unfortunately, as I've said before, we drive one of the best cars i the world and they rarely need parts. But if you do, Lexus parts are some of the most expensive around and their labor rates are truly astronomical.

This sounds like you were targeted. Damage like that to a windshield is purely destructive and has not theft motive behind it. Be it because it was a nice car, or the nicest in the lot.... or perhaps you have made someone angry. Someone you know, or somone you cut off on the road. Either way someone took the time to carry a table leg to your car and attack it.

folks are crazy these days my friend, watch yourself. I'd make a police report as well.
