Default engine ticking...

anyone experiencing or experienced a ticking noise from the engine? My 2001 LS430 has 69k on it and the engine is ticking. When I opened the hood this afternoon, i can also hear what sounds like... when you suck on a straw and tap on the end... covering air flow... it follows the rhythm of the ticking. dont know if there is any hydraulic hoses that were loose... at first i thought that it was probably the engine slightly misfiring... i will not rule that out though.. cuz i haven't changed the plugs yet. any insights?

Can you isolate where it's coming from? A stethoscope with an open-ended hose is often a great tool for tracking down the source of noises like that. Just move the open hose around very close to the engine (or other components) and listen. It's like a homing device.

Have you been using cheap gas to save a few bucks? If so, try a tank of high test (93) and see if that helps.

Sounds like an expensive fix. Make sure to keep us posted on how it turns out.
