1996 Lexus gearbox issue?
Australia
1996 Lexus Ls400
253 000kms
Driving home yesterday problems started. Prior no early signs of problems.
Problem - Started to seem like it slips. So while accelerating revs builds up but the car didnt get faster with the revs. It slipps but still changed gears.
By 5 minutes into the drive the gearbox stuttered abit aswell.
What I done -
- Checked fluid while it was warm. Full and still red in colour.
-I left it for and hour or two and tried to drive it again. Didnt slip but sounds different.
I wonder if the filter is blocked?
What I will do-
A mobile mechanic is going to come after work today to drain the fluid and change filter.
I hope it isnt the friction plates and I need a rebuild. Its only 253 000kms. I drive this baby gently.
Before a year ago an old man owned it for 10 years.
Also does anybody know where the shift solenoids are on these things and what the part numbers are? Or what to check for?
Thankyou.

what kind of fluid? ONLY Toyota T-IV (or similar 3309 spec) transmission fluid will work properly in these transmissions.

yes, the Aisin A340E in your car should last 200 to 300K miles, more than any other automatic transmission is the history of automobiles!
just drain and fill with Toyota T-IV every other oil change

Update
So he came out. Dropped the pan to the gearbox. Changed the filter. Changed to AT IV Toyota.
Filter was blocked as. It became crusty hard with gunk.
New gasket and pan went back on.
Went for 25 minute drive. ALL GOOD!
So relieved
So chalk another one up for dirty filter due to lack of maintenance.
