Default Exhaust questions; Need some Input

So I provisionally booked my LS400 in at the end of the week to get some exhaust work done. I've been wanting to do the exhaust for awhile on the car, but I've been waiting to figure out exactly what I want. I love the smooth sound of small-displacement V8s like Audi's 4.2, BMW's 4.4, and of course the 1UZ. I know a few here have their own, custom exhaust, and I'm just looking for advice on how to get the sound I'm after. I'm wondering if I should eliminate the resonators and keep mufflers, eliminate mufflers and keep resonators, or just eliminate everything? I don't want it to be obnoxiously loud. Just have a nice rumble at idle and a little sound when accelerating.

Thanks for the help and input.

I don't know what's obnoxious by your standards but these things sound awesome if you remove everything after the cats. Replace it with a x pipe to aftermarket mufflers.

this.

if you want to tame it even more, throw a couple perforated or louvered core resonators before the mufflers (but after the x-pipe_ and use the longest mufflers you can, but only use a single pair.)

there's a link to a master exhaust thread in the FAQ. you'll be wanting 2.25in piping.

thanks guys. I'll take a look in the FAQ. I did a search before posting this, but maybe I missed it.

I just don't want it sounding like an old, lifted Chevy pick-up with the exhaust hacked off and some cherry-bombs tacked in place, haha.

thanks for all the help. Got the exhaust done on Friday and I love the way the car sounds. X-pipe with single resonator, and two mufflers. It's quiet at idle, doesn't drone on the highway, and sounds nice and smooth when I accelerate. Just the way I wanted it Kept it very stock looking too.

I'm confused only one pipe has a resonator? But both have mufflers?
Thanks for clarifying!

after the headers and cats, the exhaust merges into one then the resonator and then splits again (x-pipe). Finished off with two mufflers with hidden tips.

Get rid of the center resonator and swap out the rear mufflers. Worked well for me, no drone at all...

that's actually more of a dual y-pipe setup similar to stock than an x-pipe. in a y-pipe the 2 pipes merge for some length vs. an x-pipe where the 2 pipes sort of cross and separate.

So it has a Y pipe not an x pipe. Now I get it.

Sounds like a nice choice! I used to only have a single resonator and no mufflers (got pulled over like every week) So I now have only 1 muffler after the cat and 2.5" piping. it sounds prettty good still but low key.

How much of a difference in sound if i choose to go with 2.5 instead of a 2.25 after cats, x pipes or H pipes to 2 resonators, and finishing off with 2 mufflers.

And does anyone have any experience with the dual tip Vibrant mufflers instead of the Magnaflow?
