Exclamation 96 LS ecu gone bad

Lexus service just diagnosed my ruff engine and low idle as the ecu needing to be replaced. It's a 96 ls400 manufacture date December '95. i don't the vin or part # from the ecu. The car's still at the dealer. I saw on a blog were someone replaced their ecu with a part # different than the original part # in the car and it also solved the engine dying after a long hiway trip and also solved the intermediate clunky shifting at 40-45 mph.
my question is; What ecu part # will solve all this for me, or should I just have the existing ecu rebuilt???
