Are Lexus fuel consumption claims correct ?
When cruising in my '98 LS400, the fuel consumption readout shows 8.2Litres per 100km's. This would mean that with an 85 litre tank, i should be able to do 1000km's per tank full and thats impossible. When cuising on the hwy, i get about 650km per tank which is about 12.5 km per 100km. I live in Gosford and a drive to my mums up the hwy to Port Macquarie is 400km... thats an 800km round trip so if i fill up in Gosford, i should easily get back home (800km) with plenty left in the tank which it wont, i have to fill up before half way home. Now i don't know if my maths are correct but 8.2L per 100km = 1000km with an 85L tank yes ? Could someone varify this ?

I can put $10 dollars in at $3.48 a gallon....which is about 2.8 gallons and I will get on avarage 72 miles. but I get fuel starvation and run lean at the end. I have been doing this for the last week to verify my gas mileage.
so my 91 is getting about 23-ish mile per gallon. this is stop-n-go in the morning and freeway at night .
so far it is pretty consistant. I drive pretty conservativly. average speed limit in town is 40 mph, and the freeway is about 60.
on my way to work is 13.8 miles, my trip home is 17 .5.
hope this helps.

If you are using 68L/18 gallons to get 650km's, this is average fuel consumption. 37km/23 MPG/ typical is 41km/25MPG to the 3.79L/gallon. (Hope my conversion is correct.)
This depends on traffic conditions and so forth. My usual around town I get 32km/20MPG. So yours seems typical with some city and highway.

youre over thinking it deanshark.
my drive in the morning is city/surface streets and is 13 miles.
my drive home is nearly all freeway, because I go a different route which is 17 miles.
my gas mileage is combined between the 2........and I get about 23-ish mpg.
.
and I know its km.....i think the equasion is 1.3km per mile

This also depends on quality of gas used. Some of us stateside have the 10% ethanol mix which reduces performance and MPG slightly. With good gas, I would think the 98+ is capable of 43-47km/26-29MPG all highway. (There are other gas mileage threads to reference.)
Is the gas down under mixed with ethanol? Are you using the 91-92 octane rated gas?

I use 7-11 gas or this one Valero gas station
my mileage varies by gas station. ive tried the qt gas, but my mileage is decreased.
and I use 91 everytime. the qt gas kills my mileage by 10-15 %.
im really **** about where I get my gas, because at $70 for a full tank...i want the most.
the op is surely within the range of mileage and "claims".
anytime you do highway driving compared to city driving, theres going to be a difference.
tire pressure, vehicle load, ac on or off, windows up or down......its all a factor. depending on how the car was initally tested for mpg/kmg plus the epa regulations, and the up or down scale of the true vehicle ratings given by the manufacturer to meet certain reguirements to classify a car to meet or under-exceed epa regulations......avoiding the gas guzzler tax, plus the monies/taxes on top of it.......oh wait, NOW IM over thinking it.
not to mention that the op is going from home, to mum, and half way back to fill up......but not taking into account of acceleration....freeway speeds, speeding up to pass the slow guy in front.
has anyone ever noticed that when you fill the tank, jump on the freeway and go 200 miles, the guage only goes down to 3/4 mark.....but if you drive 200 miles in the city, it burns almost twice as fast?
the op is getting roughly 615 miles per tank. and roughly 27 miles per gallon......well within the "claimed" mpg/kmg.....all freeway/highway/motor way.....and makes perfect sense that halfway back home....requires more gas to get home.
the op gets 68 more miles to a tank than my 91 with 307 thousand miles.
which means .......its all good.

Right now my tank avarage is 11.3L/100km (20.8mpg). I would estimate that my driving goes in the category mix driving with just a tad of more highway driving. The claimed fuel consumption in EU for mix driving for the 1998-2000 LS400 is 12L/100km (19.6mpg) and 9.5L/100km (24.8mpg) for highway if I remember correct.

fuel economy..
I don't understand miles and mpg... i only know km's...
however, with 85 litre's, doesn't 8.2L per 100km equate to 1000km per tank ?
My '98 LS400 has an 85 litre (18.7 gallon) tank. Ive never done a real test, like fill it up and cruise around untill it runs out, then i'd really know. The dash display says on average hyw, 8.2L per 100km and 650km (400 miles) range when filled on that average which is 21.3mpg.....
Well if i convert all the figures,
8.2 litres = 1.8 gallons
85 litres =18.7 gallons... so 8.2L per 100km = 1.8 gallons per 62 miles
So according to the dash readout, i should be getting about 637 miles per tank full which is about 34mpg.... which is total bollacks.....
Is there anyone out there with a '98 LS400 getting 637 miles to a tank of gas ?

my figures show...
85l = 22.5 gallons
1000km= 621 miles
no, you arent getting 34 miles per gallon, but at best, 27 miles per gallon based on once you get upto a certain speed and stay there.
in my earlier post, I said you were getting roughly 615 miles per tank....and 27 mpg...
so...615 miles is 989 km
and 27 mpg = 11.48 kml
and you beat my highest mpg by roughly 68 miles or....109 km.
for your original post, you are within the fuel consumption range.....as calimed.
I know you say you dont understand mpg/mph.......but, it all depends on your speed. those gas consumption readouts are ver conjectual and not all that accurate.

Oops! my conversion figures wern't correct. . .
But anyway, the dash display is telling me when hwy cruising i'm getting 8.2L per 100km which equates to 29.5mpg..... and i know my LS won't get 29.5mpg.
By the way... those figures that the dash display is showing are just figures from the map. Like, its not acctually reading fuel flow, its reading off the map, regardless of how much fuel its using....
