Default First Gen - oil drain bolt

When doing an oil change, is it necessary or recommended to replace the oil drain bolt at the same time? Or can the old one be reused? Is it purely a judgement call?

If changed, is the Dorman or Beck/Arnley part preferred?

Thanks in advance.

Just clean it off, wipe it down and re-use. Unless the gasket material on the bolt itself is completely gone and the pan is leaking,,why would you replace it?

When changing the motor oil, the bolt, or drain plug, isn't replaced - but it's usually recommended to replace the plastic washer. They're pretty cheap, even at a toyota or lexus dealer. I usually just wipe the washer clean and reuse it and I haven't had any problems. The transmission pan drain plug on the other hand is a metal crush washer, and I change that one each time I remove the plug.

Just an FYI...I changed my oil the other day on my 90 LS and let the kids help out (teaching them how to change oil). They accidentally left the washer off the plug and I didn't notice. I re-torqued the plug back on and the next day I had a pretty good oil drip coming from the pan. Had to drain the oil again and re-install the bolt with a new washer. Don't forget the washer, because it WILL leak.

Default Thanks guys on the drain bolt.

Thanks guys. I will reuse my drain bolt. It's not leaking at all. I was just wondering. I will however replace the crush washer with Dorman 97127.

I'm all also going to give aftermarket a try on the oil filter this time. On the WIX filters, is the closest match to the OEM -YZZD3 the WIX 51348? It looks closer in size to the OEM. Alternatively, I also see the WL7172, but it looks longer. I just want as close as possible to the OEM fit, but on the aftermarket.

Again, thanks in advance, and I'm not trying to start an oil war here. I just want to give aftermarket at try, having used exclusively OEM on my 92 for almost twenty years.

+1. Have read a number of comparisons, and the NAPA Gold is one of the better filters for the money.
