Remove middle mufflers, better sound or worse?
The two middle mufflers on my 91' LS is kindda busted. One of them is rattling a bit and i can see the they both have been opened before and welded together again.
So i was thinking of instead of opening them again maybe i could remove them and just put in a straight pipe instead. I have a K/N airfilter and it sounds a little more sporty instead of stock.
I dont want it to sound like an american v8, such as corvette etc. i love the sound of mercedes SL500 amg etc. more smooth and controlled sound if you know what i mean.
What do you guys think it will sound like?

Yeah i want to stay with my rear oem mufflers. Just remove the two middle mufflers. keep the "front" muffler too. Are you calling the two middle ones resonators? Sorry to ask but its a bit confusing when coming from another country People on youtube have removed resonators. But the rear or the middle ones!?!
Havent found the exact match on youtube. Only folks that removed everything or almost everything. Sounds ricer to me. I want to keep the deep sound. Dont want to get the soda can sound.

I really need to post a video for ya'll. Mine the 2 resonators are gone as well as the 3rd cat and its repiped with an x pipe and 2 1/4" pipe all the back to the stock muffs. I get compliments on it all the time sounds amazing! Plus over like 50 you can hardly hear it.

Hey hobojoe, yeah you gotta upload that video on youtube or something.
Do you have a picture of your install? What did you do with the mounting plates and pipe from the cats and back?
I think its annoying that they have place the cats that low, because i have problems with running low on coilovers and the cats scrape speedbumps etc So i'm thinking on installing stainless steel sport cats instead and weld them a bit higher.
It would be nice to have a complete stainless steel exhaust all the way but its expensive. Headers would be nice too. But i cant find anyone who makes them for the LS. a brand called SS did it some years back but the company is no more.

if the middle mufflers are the ones just behind the rear axle, then yeah I've deleted those (and removed air filter cover - thanks guys!).
It sounds good when I get on it, but otherwise it's nearly as quiet as stock. And it lets me hear the engine just enough to know whats happening... when it was stock I had trouble maintaining a steady speed due to the lack of aural feedback!
So... go for it

I'm sure gonna try deleting those middle mufflers. They are busted anyway so why not just remove them and add a pipe instead.
bigjohn, i think the sound is ok but it would be nice to hear it rolling. i think its maybe too much for me and i dont like the huge look on the exhaust tips. It looks odd imo. But its sure not like those other soda can sounds some other guys have.
jif, i think you have removed the rear mufflers?
Heres a picture: I am talking about the middle mufflers as in (4) in the picture.

Sweet Sound
I went with 2 1/4" from just below O2 sensors back to just ahead of stock rear mufflers. Will eventually go with new mufflers and 2 1/4 all the way, but I really like the way it sounds now. Quiet, but can hear the 1UZ-FE at work.
