98 LS fuel filter location
Guys,
I'm trying to figure out why my car won't start. Starter spins fine, got one small sputter of ignition after I replaced the fuel pump last night, then nothing. I have been a bad boy and not replaced the fuel filter. It has 89k miles now. I've been to two local shops and nobody seems to be able to locate the filter. The earlier cars had it down on the driver's side frame rail, but I think I've search this site and the whole 'net, and not found where it is. I have some pressure now, so maybe it's not the filter. Need to check for spark now - I know, not very logical of me. This car has been so trouble free, I'm frustrated as to why something like this might happen, and of course it's a few days before an important family trip on Friday.
Thanks,
Rob

Hi!
I recently changed my fuel filter and it only takes a few minutes (under 20).
It is located up on the body in front of the rear differential. Very simple and I noticed more power. The old one was almost clogged. I have 145K on my silver one.
The toyota part number: 23300-50060
This is for a 98 ls400
Good luck

floresea, this should help:

While the tutorial and pics are for 90-94, it should be very similar for you 96. Pull the fuel pump fuse and start the car until it dies.

I think I found it. I guess the previous picture I posted is for the 2nd Fuel Filter which is part of the Fuel Pump Assembly. The Fuel Filter is located to the Right of the Rear Differential.
As you can see from this picture, I don't think the Fuel Filter has ever been changed (I have almost 230,000 miles on my '96 LS400). All that corrosion on the filter fittings is making me think twice about attempting to do this job myself...

I've had it for 8 months and haven't had any issues... I did do the 90k maintenance on it as soon as I bought it though (timing chain, water pump, etc.)... and I even drove it across the country from MD to CA recently... so considering I have spent ~$5k total (purchase price + major service) for an LS400 with excellent interior/mechanical condition, I think the car has already paid for itself!
I actually just found a local shop that will do the fuel filter replacement for $112 total (parts/labor/tax), so I'm hoping they won't have too much trouble with it.
