How Can You Tell If Car Is Smoking?
Newbie here. Just bought the 1995 with 152K. Everything going great with car, but when I start it seems like a lot of exhaust smoke. Lasts for 5 - 10 minutes.
Don't see or smell any oil, but anything I should be looking into?
Thought appreciated.

I have a similar problem. Any abnormal amount of smoke is considered "smoking," and it's never a good thing, unless its due to Seafoam treatment. I start my car, and the entire road is blinded by white smoke. In my case, it is due to my power steering leak.

Just like you can see your breath when it's cold. The white smoke is condensation from the engine, after it heats up the smoke will stop. Nothing to worry about unless its blue or black smoke.

Yeah, but I doubt it's normal, as in my case, that the entire road is smoked even when warm, by pure white smoke.

You are right on. Smoke gone in about 10 minutes. Turned on the CX9 and our Honda Pilot and both actually had more white smoke than the LS400. Just had never noticed before.
thx,

AFAIK white smoke = coolant burning? Could be a headgasket or some other kind of coolant leak. However, what's happening to the op's car sounds like what you're describing.

If it was the headgasket and you were burning the coolant, you would know that by now, its a major problem, and you would burn up all the coolant pretty quick, and the engine would overheat and seize very quickly.
The white smoke during colder months is most likely just condensation and completely normal. However it is common for the power steering pump to leak power steering fluid into the intake manifold, where it gets burned, and you get the white smoke. It's a very easy fix, search the sticky thread on the power steering.
