Integrity of the LS 400/LS 430 sedans
I seen no poll area for this question, but what it the interior integrity (squeaks and rattles) of your Lexus and what is the mileage? Most Lexus' seem to rate excellent in these areas, but some 1999 reports on the then new Lexus GS's showed it to have some squeaks and rattles even when new. My aunts 90 LS 400 is totally rattle free even @ over 100K. I am considering a LS 400 and would like to know how the other 400s rate @ high miles. Thanks.

I have a 1990 LS400 with 135k miles. There are several rattles and squeeks. There was a major one in the door that I fixed by replacing a screw. There is one annoying on above the drivers side top belt harness that is behind the lining, and another above the rear view mirror connector.

I have a 1996 with 64k miles -- nothing but rattles. In the last week there is an extremely loud rattling coming from the front left corner of the cabin -- even blasting the radio doesn't help.
While I love the driveability of the Ls 400 -- I am totally disappointed in the rattling -- should not happen on a $60k car with low miles. On average probably have 3-6 rattles at any given time -- doors, dash, armrest, steering column -- it stinks. Dealer stated to me that most of them do it and there's not much that can be done unless you want to spend hours having a tech drive and try to figure it out -- in other words pay us big $$$$and we'll see what we can do.
While the car is more solid and drives more impressively than my 1996 Lincoln Continental -- in my opinion the interior quality in terms of stability and lack of rattles in the Lincoln is superior.
Lexus is just a big Toyota -- it is an awesome ride -- but still just a car with lots of parts to give problems.
Good Luck

hlippy,
you just probably got a bad LS. However, every car will have rattles and noises eventually and the time at which those rattles happens depends largely on the quality of roads and how the car is driven.

Had a 92SC and a 93LS. Sold both with close to 140K miles. Never had a squeak or rattle in either of them. Presently have a 98LS and a 99GS4. Again, no squeaks or rattles in either. The 98 has 65K miles. The 99 only has 39K miles.

I have a 92 LS400 with 216,000 miles. Whenever I hear a noise or rattle I find that it is something I left in the car such as a bag making the noise rather than the car itself. I travel 160 miles per weekday and this car is quiet!

Overall I would have to say that it is fairly quiet when compared to many other cars its age but not as quiet as it was new. Mainly it appears that the seats make the moist noice by squeaking. But this is only when drivng over very rough roads, not on the highway. I can say that this has been true of ALL cars I have owned.
BUT I must say that I do have the following complaints with the quality of the interior. It seems that over the past couple of years, interior panels and parts seem to be getting loose and the leather is of the worst in its class.

Thanks for the replies. It seems like the LS 400 is typically a quiet car, as I remember my aunts 90 LS 400 w/100K was about two years ago. Consumer reports rate the LS 400 high in this area, rating it much above average in most years compared to other cars of the same years. Has anyone even previously owned a ES 300? Without posting on the ES forum right now, does your ES seem to be about the same as the LS?

I too would agree that the way the interior is put together in recent Lexus models seems to be worse than it used to be. I have a 2001 LS430 and while it is great and nothing seems to be wrong, the interior just doesn't seem to have the same "solid" feel as my old 97 ls400 did. I guess that is the problem when you start making the interior with so many different types of materials and you try and give it some character. oh well. Car still kicks some serious ***

I have a 93 LS which just turned its 93,200th mile. Not a sound. Well, I need to get new tires but other than that... I too have found that if there is a rattle it is probably something in the truck or something I put on the back seat which has shifted in some way.
I had my Lex in the body shop at my dealer (some dufus ran into the rear passenger side door). I had to drive a borrowed 95 Neon and also a loaner 2001 Pontiac Bonneville (when my insurance kicked in for it). I got my LS back today - the silence while driving it (other than my stereo) was a thing of sublime beauty! My dealer did a fantastic job - there are no words to describe the superb job they did fixing the car up!
