Alternator / Power Steering Dilemma
Hi All,
I seem to be in a little situation here and I am hoping that someone can give me some mechanical advice regarding what to actually fix:
Okay so one day i'm driving on the road when my car suddently shuts off....go to a mechanic, they look at it, and diagnose as bad alternator. Fixed, and problem solved.
About 4 months later, my car dies again. I take it to the same guy and he realizes that the reason my alternator keeys dying is because my power steering fluid is leaking all over it shorting it out. So he recommends that both the power steering hose and the pump need to be replaced.
However, i took it to another mechanic for a 2nd opinion and he says that the pump only needs replacing. So I went with his opinion and only got the hose replaced (The alternator was also replaced, but by the 1st mechanic).
So right after i got it fixed, I took the car for a long distance trip (about 250 miles), and my battery light came flashing on.....The car is still currrently running, but i'm afraid that the car might die again.
Could the issue be not replacing the power steering pump? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks,
JP

I've seen this problem happen and usually it is the pump leaking onto the alternator. But since u changed the hose and alternator the only things I could think of is a bad connection. Cause I know when I upgraded my alternator the cable from the alt to battery had a bad connection and the battery wasn't gettin charged. That or he didn't give u a new alternator but just cleaned it and replaced it.

phy,
Thanks for the advice..
u mentioned this:
Even though i replaced ONLY the hose and the alternator, is it possible that the PUMP itself could be leaking and shorting the alternator?
If that is true, would i have to get both the pump and the alternator replaced?
Thanks again,
JP

you probably have the power steering pump leaking
John,
The power steering pump is leaking on the alternator and shorting it out this has been a big problem for a lot of people, You might have to replace the alternator again due to the power steering oil driping on it and shorting it out.
You can also take the Lexus to an auto electric shop and have them test the alternator usually is't free. Another thing is to have your shop person always change out the power steering fluid every 30,000 miles keeps the seals in good condition. Don't use any of the power steering fluids that soften the seals on the power steering pump just makes it worse change out the pump if you see oil leaking from the pump.

so you replaced the hose despite the fact your 2nd mechanic said the pump only needs replacing? well you are lucky because the hose is the culprit to your alternator shorting.

Sorry to dig up this ancient thread. I've got a 1996 LS400 and the alternator has gone. (PS fluid leaked). The guys at the dealership say this alternator doesn't exist, but there seem to be some available on line. Dealer says the part no has to be 27060-50100. But I've found on several sites part number 27060-50190 which the sight says is a match for the '96 LS400. Any idea on how these vary and if it will be usable if I order it?
Thanks for any insight...

Amayama lists two part numbers: 27060-50190, 27060-50200. I'm not sure why they're both $1100.
https://www.amayama.com/en/catalogs/.../alternator-35
LPN says Lexus 27060-50190, which was replaced buy 27060-50190-84 (which appears to be listed as a remanufactured alternator).
https://www.lexuspartsnow.com/parts/...060-50190.html
LPN also says 27060-50100 is discontinued and was replaced.

Thanks 400fanboy. So the LPN site says this one is a fit:
https://www.lexuspartsnow.com/oem-le...tra2=&filter=()
Are they usually right about that?
And only $320
Alternatively there's this on Amzazon for $130 !
Same number 27060-50190 but maybe not so great?
But it seems like these will fit?

Bell Lexus has the 27060-50190-84 for ~$325 with a $75 core charge. Remanufactured part. Been happy dealing with them.

otherwise, the 2706050190 version seems like it physically fits correctly, but spec says it’s only 80amp which is even less than the 100amp 2706050100
Is that really enough juice for the LS400? Even though all the “parts checker” sites say it’s a fit….
There's also a 100A one here that also seems like it could work. https://www.ebay.ca/itm/290412270937
Thanks again. This forum is amazing….

I would look for a Denso 210-0174 which is a rebuilt unit. However, these things are out of stock in locations where I've checked. This kind of aligns with rumblings that Denso rebuilt alternators of this vintage are going to be discontinued. You might get lucky and find a place that has left over stock.

Denso looks to have the reman 2001 vintage 130 amp alternator as well, at least for the moment.

One thing I noticed was that the voltage at the idle was keeping 14.3V with full load. The temperature compensation is done more aggressively compared with the original alternator. It goes down about 1V after running 1 hour or the alternator is fully warmed up. I mean the voltage becomes 13.3V or so.
