Speaker Replacement - Mark Levinson Sound
Thanks to my son I have 2 rough sounding speakers in the front doors of my 2004 RX330. I have the ML sound system with navigation. The thing I think I liked most about my car was the sound system. I love music.
Now it sounds like my Acer computer speakers!
Lexus has offered to replace the 2 speakers with ML speakers but their asking price of $600 - $700 hurts. A local sound shop thinks they can replace with aftermarket speakers but they want to know the size, ohms, etc. of the bad speakers to give me an estimate.
I also believe that, because of the configuration of the RX330 (SUV) there are less speakers than in a sedan. ?
What are the specs of all of my speakers and the amplifier?
Has anyone had good success with other than ML speakers?

I had the same problem with my newly acquired used 03 SC430. I followed the details in the link below and was able to repair my speaker with no problem. You could be experiencing the same problem. Took about an hour and I used some Loctite 587 gasket sealer I had at work. Good luck.

Hi Guy's
I went out got some DC Gold Marine 6x9 8 ohm's speakers.
They are the best sounding speakers I have heard. Now I can hear the radio nice. One time buy they won't go bad. Gold makes 2, I got the best one's.
Regards

In reading past forum entries I heard that the ML has mult-channel frequency output so that each ML speaker is specifically tuned for a specific frequency range which makes aftermarket replacement difficult. Also the 2 ohms of some ML speakers can be an issue. Sounds like this was not an issue for you, I'm guessing your replacement speaker excels at reproducing the freq. range of the ML speaker it replaced. Glad to hear all worked well.

gsgdbeck,
All speakers are made for a specific frequency range and as long as they are about the same size it should be ok. As far as the impedance (ohms), you are right in that it is difficult to find a 2 ohm aftermarket speaker. However, you can use any speaker with a higher impedance (read as higher Ohm value 4 or 8 ohm). The difference is that the amplifier will put out roughly half the amount of power each time you double the ohm rating. This will likely cause some inbalance in how the system sounds as a whole because the frequencies reproduced by the new speakers will be softer than originally designed by the engineers at ML/Lexus.
