Nakamichi swap with pioneer

Ditto. Replacing the Pioneer with Nakamichi would actually be quite easy, as you just replace every component, but honestly you wouldn't be gaining much. Running all new aftermarket equipment would be minimally more work but yield significantly better results.

So if I understand correctly, you replace all the speakers, the 2 amps and the head unit. Doesn't sound difficult just time consuming. I am considering doing this because I am trying to buy the cleanest LS first gen I can find. Everytime I find one it doesn't have NAK! Driving me nuts.

For the SC, as long as you got the CD changer option from factory (some SC's did not have the changer and do not have a head unit with the CD button) it is plug and play going from Pioneer to Nakamichi. No need to add a power cable, fuses, or anything else.
Three items you will need: the Nak head unit, Nak amp, and Nak subwoofer. Door and deck speakers can stay, but will distort passed the 11 o'clock mark on the volume dial and will eventually blow, but then since the Nak system has more power, you can pop in any aftermarket 4" speaker. CD changer is the same. Sub must be swapped as the Pio is a 1-Ohm design where the Nak is 5-Ohm. The only hacking of the harness you will need to do is extending the speaker wire from the amp to the subwoofer by about 2 feet (the sub amp is moved from the rear deck to under the CD changer).
I changed mine out early on and was the only option to get better sound and keep the stock, clean look. (No Metra adapter back then).
I agree getting aftermarket is a better option now as it give you all the advanced features (XM, Nav, bluetooth, USB, Ipod, etc) for probably around the same price now. Each of the three necessary components will run you around $100 each, if you can even find them. But must say, my Nak has served me well and with me hacking an AUX input into my system, I just connect my ipod and go. And to get better sound while keeping the stock look... this is the best way to go.
