Replacement for ML factory sub with photos (a work in progress)
I have done a ton of reading on the forums over the past few days and I have heard folks talk about drop in replacements for the factory sub. I recently purchased my a GS with the ML and Nav. I was tinkering around trying to figure out why the sub wasn't working.
Basically it was blown by the previous owner (see the weird crease in the cardboard) and his solution was to simply snip the visible yellow wire on the sub while you are in the trunk. I reconnected it and confirmed it is blown, but now I need to find a replacement.
The wire he snipped. I stripped it and twisted just to confirm the sub was blown.
Also I went ahead and pulled the back seats, deck cover and the sub itself.
Hole needing a new sub...
What I need now is to find a drop in replacement (preferred) or a sub box that will fit tidily in the trunk. I don't want to give up much space at all if i don't have to.
As for the free air drop in replacement I have heard those are impossible to find and I have had no luck myself when doing some searching around. Can you guys provide me some suggestions?

id say dont put a sub in the stock location thats what i did and there was way too much rattling, it was a kicker CVR 10'" so i took it out and got a custom box built and sold the kicker cause its garbage haha and bought 2 JL W3's which seriously bump

Elemental Designs has a nice drop-in solution, which includes the sub.

I ended up with the JL Audio 8 ohm 10 inch sub. I went ahead and had them put dynamat across the rear deck. Looks and sounds pretty clean.
I ended up using the stock bracket to mount it. I cut the bottom of the ML sub bracket out with a dremel cutting disk and then used the 8 mounting holes on the JL to screw it into the bracket. I put some 1/4 foam tape between the metal to keep it from rattling.

Looks good,I did the samething in my SC. Had to cut the NAK sub out & do some hoggin with a hand grider but got the sub to fit. Ive tried several subs in this car & cause of the tank you ar limited to certain subs, the best one i have found that fits is a eclipse 10. i had my 1st one for about 3-4yrs b4 it died. thats when i test sounded acouple different ones, JL like yours, JL marine, & a kicker, none sounded like my eclipse, so i found another shop that sold eclipse,i told them what i had, they said my old sub shouldnt work in free air, but did. so they said well this is the sub that replaced your old one, we dont think it will work but you can try it, went outside pluged it up, just set in the hole, sounded better than the 1st one. if later you change to a after market amp the JL 500/5 works perfect for the hole car. Thats what i got & i hope it never goes out, its that good.

Update......
Replaced the dying amp with a newer model from a new SC. Model ending in 070. Bolted in like a champ and is powering the system MUCH better. It also fixed some other minor issues. I may have to that every couple years because it appears these amps are crap.
