Default Radio/Stereo Problem on 1992 SC400

Hi guys......another problem with the car has just starter showing it ugly face!

My stereo system on my car has suddenly stopped putting music out??

The the stereo turns on and displays the track playing like normal, but no sound??
No sound if I select radio either??

Sometimes if I turn the car off and then immediately restart, it will work normal but most of the time....nothing.

I have the Nakamichi with 12 disc changer with subwoofer.

I am thinking maybe the amp but if that is blown why would it work only sometimes??

What else are the possibilities for intermediate sound?

Thanks

See if any wires leading to the amp are cut or crushed.

Anyone have any other ideas? Is there a "reset" button I can push or any type of diagnostic I can run??

Like I said, the head unit seems to be working fine its just no sound come out.........However, sometimes it does work.....thats what makes this hard to figure out!

I just inspected the amp......no wires look damaged.....the amp does not smell like burnt plastic or anything that would indicate that it is blown.....it is the Nakamichi amp!

Even though the stereo unit seems to be working normal....is it common for anything to fail on them??

Try replacing the fuse for it. I thought my Nakimichi stereo was done, but pulling and replacing the fuse fixed the problem.

Can a fuse be bad even though it appears ok???

Which fuse...under the hood....under steering wheel??? or is there an actual fuse on the head unit??

when the amp fried, did it smell weird?....usually amps smell horrible when they fry right? Mine smells odorless so I think that is still ok!

I am going to try the fuse tomorrow!

Mine does the same thing, only when it gets hot though.
If it's cold outside, it's good for about 45 minutes, then there's a loud "pop" noise like pulling out the plug on a pair of headphones, then nothing. Once it cools off, it's fine again. If it's been sitting in the sun, it goes "pop" almost immediately. Also have Nak with changer etc.

There should be a fuse for it in the box under the hood. I didn't even need to replace mine, simply removed it, made sure it was good and clean, reset the ECU, and put the original fuse back in place.

Well I replaced both fuses, under the hood and the one under the dashboard......Still nothing??

The Head unit turns on and appears to work as it should, The amp doesn't smell like it has been blown.........Im not sure what too do??

It produced sound once in a while, but for the past 4 days have not been able to get any sound out of it whatsoever! .....I dont think I can expect the sound to come back by itself at this point!

What would you guys replace first?? AMP or HEAD UNIT???

I had the same thing happen to me, but you could smell the burning.. the amp and radio is fried somewhere, your best bet is to go ahead and upgrade your system with aftermarket equipment. It's definately worth the hassle and price..

Default Possibly Blown Speakers

dirkdiggle, It could be blown speakers, especially if the stock speakers are still in the car? You could test the rear speakers via the trunk or go about this way for a visual answer.
