I've never heard about this stuff. You're right, typical silicon dressings will stain any color, but more noticeable in White. Does it give a wet look or a natural flat look?
I usually coat twice for more natural flat look but it can be coated many times for shinier look.
I've had really good results/experience with Armor All's Extreme Tire Shine Gel. I realize not everyone likes products containing silicone, I previously had some really bad experiences with other "big-name/well known" brands myself, but this one has actually delivered on its promises - things like no drying/cracking/browning and being long lasting. Anyway, below are some pics...
Nice I actually like how your tires look. I think my dad used to use this stuff. I'll ask him again! Does it come in a small bottle with a foam applicator?

This is the only over the counter product I use on my car. Its great. What most dont know is that its water-based and not silicone. I use a few coats for more gloss. The secret to this or any tire shine is to let it sit. So, when I use it. Its always before I park for the evening. When you come back, your tires shine. The other great thing is this product lasts. I normally go 2 weeks to 4 week per application and the tires still shine. It even lasts after rain.

I use Black Magic Tire Wet. It gives it that wet shiny appearance. One of the things I like about this brand is that it's a totally clear liquid. I'm a bit skeptical about using milky, or worse yet, liquids with ammonia in it, such as Armor All, because they often turn the tires yellow or dull over time. I've been using Tire Wet for years and haven't had a yellow tire since.
