Default Whistle from Xpel PPF on mirrors - solved!

I had a pronounced whistle from the driver's mirror. Research here indicated that it was caused by the Xpel Ultimate PPF. The dealer confirmed that it went-away after the PPF was removed, and they then re-installed the PPF and told me that I would have to make the call if I wanted to keep it or have it removed again.

I noticed that the whistle would stop when I put my hand on the underside of the mirror housing where it attaches to the stalk. I little experimenting found that a 2" long piece of clear tape, covering the edge of the PPF in that area, eliminated the whistle. It's completely invisible except upon close inspection of the area.

I also get whistle or howl near my mirrors when windows are down. It actually amplifies the sound in front of you when driving. ie, if the car in front of me has a louder exhaust i would hear their exhaust near the mirrors.

I dont know what xpel ultimate ppf is and i dont think i have it.

xpel is a paint protective film (PPF) like a clear bra. hard to believe a film product could make that big of a sound difference. maybe wax the surface so the air glides over smoother?

It is hard to believe, but I'm not the first person here to report the issue. Apparently the way the air comes off that edge... I noticed it right-away on my first drive home with my fine new machine (IS350 RWD).

I think some of those with the problem just had it removed from their mirrors and left it off.

My Sister had the same problem with her Porsche Cayman. Drove the dealer nuts trying to figure out the source of the wind noise. After replacing all the door seals, the whistling was still there and the dealer was left scratching their heads. So they took off the film off the drivers side mirror and it stopped!

It's hard to belive their 3m film would cause this issue especially when you consider the passenger side is fine and this dealer has not seen this issue before and it's installed on every vehicle they sell.
But the proof was undeniable, took the film off and the whistling stopped.
