Blind Spot Monitor
Anyone notice it not detecting a car next to you? Thank god I don't rely on them 100%, but I have noticed twice that they haven't detected a car.

You have a sedan though so that blows that theory.

Haven't had it not detect a car yet but at best it only gives you about a 1 car length warning that a car is there which is not much. I find the BSM much more useful in parking lots backing up out of a tight space or being parked between two SUV's with no visibility to look around.

Are you talking about a car next to you, or a car in your blind spot? Because the system isn't designed to detect cars right next to you. It only lights up when there is a car in your blind spot, which is the area from around the rear door to about 1/2 car length behind you. It doesn't light up if a car is side-by-side with your car, or if a car 2 lanes over is trying to merge into the same lane. But as you have mentioned, it's not a system to be relied on anyway; drivers should still always check for themselves before changing lanes. The BSM warning should just be treated as an extra layer of safety.
