Are you frequently driving in heavy, stop and go traffic? I've had a few commutes where that was the case and I was around 18L/100km. For the most part I drive in suburban traffic with stops, but not close to stop and go, and in that I've been getting 13-14L/100km during the coldest days. All situations included, of which 20% is highway driving, I've been between 12-13L/100km this winter. Before it was really cold, I was getting 11-12.
Unless you're continuously hitting stop & go traffic, or pushing it hard, there's no way a healthy version of this engine should be getting such dismal fuel economy.

If properly 'broken-in', driven respectfully with 50-50 highway to city driving and premium fuel, what can be causing the poor mileage reported!?
What can be wrong that's not throwing a check engine light!?
And has anyone had their dealer perform a fuel consumption test?
Thanks. :|

Is there any faulty part that could cause excess gas usage at idle or lower speeds that wouldn't affect very much once on the hwy?

Those who are getting low teens MPG try resetting your gauge and see what you get. It would be interesting if you could do that also when on hwy. Most likely it's your commute (which may have a lot of stop and go and cold weather climate). Most people complaining about low MPG seems to be from cold weather regions.

Mine was registering low teens when I picked it up. I reset the mpg after I filled it up. Mileage has been in the 20s. The dealer told me they use regular unleaded when filling it up. I put in premium. On my previous car, I noticed a marked difference between Costco gas and gas from the shell station by my house. I got better mpg with she'll gas but I had to pay more. Not sure if the price difference was worth it.

I drive mostley 90% local and 10% freeway. so far the best I got with sport+ mode wa about 13mpg, and when I'm at normal I get to 16mpg, really don't want to go eco mode.....takes the fun out of the car than why buy it. so yeah, bad MPG indeed. Los Angeles a full tank 62 to 65 dollar.....hold up about a week or less. it hurts sometime I feel....

i didn't start recording mileage til what is shown below. I was hoping after a couple of long hwy trips, the city mileage (commute miles) would tick up but it stayed the same. Recently, Costco became a Top Tier supplier (http://www.costco.com/gasoline.html) so that will help with the pocketbook. I use this site for prices: http://www.losangelesgasprices.com which is a mobile app and search for premium. You can cross reference this against Top Tier suppliers at http://www.toptiergas.com/retailers.html#
The last record where I averaged 15.98 is disappointing because I drove more conservatively and used the Current Fuel Consumption gauge to help provide me feedback for increased mileage. I drove in Normal with Sport. I used a lighter foot and coasted a lot more to red lights.
I'm going back to Normal mode (no S) on my latest fill (today). I've driven about 52 city miles today and so far it's sitting around 18 mpg but I had a some nice stretches (2 to 3 miles) by the coast with no lights and that really helped. But I think that will go back down to 16 once I start go/return from work. I have a 10 mile round trip and it has 6 lights each way that I get minimum but usually no more than 8.

I don't know how anyone could get better gas mileage in sport + unless they are running the car hard in eco mode which is not what it's for. Sport + automatically raises the rpm to get you more into the powerband and increases max shift points which are conducive to performance and not good gas mileage. I'm averaging 23 mpg in my RWD with 65% highway/35% city using mostly eco and normal and my motor only has 125 miles so gas mileage will only improve. If I'm in eco I'm babying it and switch to normal if I need more acceleration. Sport + is when I don't care about gas mileage.

I have had my 3IS since the first week of August and my commute to work is mostly highway, 30 miles one way with about 3 miles of that being local road, the rest 27 miles are highway and traffic on and off. I sometimes take it on the weekends to groceries and whatnot but i usually take my '09 Honda Fit Sport for that.
I leave the car on ECO mode almost all the time with a few exceptions of Sport+ when i need it such as merging onto the highway or trying to take over someone. When i do use S+ mode, i am flooring it and not driving conservatively at all. I never use NORMAL mode at all...maybe in the beginning but not since then.
With this in mind, i usually get around 24-25 MPG in the summer and these past few brutally cold winter months in NY have brought my MPG's down to as low as 21.x to usually around 23.
I also check my average speed since my last refuel and its usually around 40 MPH. My tires are around 32 when cold and increase to around 36 when warm but i may increase it to about 36 cold as i have heard higher PSI should increase MPG but sacrifice some ride quality as long as its not too high.
I currently have over 9000 miles and have not changed the oil as of yet but will be doing this very soon since i will hit the 10K mark in April.
Below are my fillups since i bought the car and the best mileage i ever received was 29MPG where i filled up in NJ, drove to the Poconos and filled back in NJ, almost all highway and in ECO mode 100% of that time.
Worst was 21 in the heart of winter with all the snow and a very long 3 hour commute from work to home which normally would take 35 minutes. I did use SNOW and ECO mode a lot as well in Jan and in Feb.
Premium gas is usually hovering around the $4 mark and every tank is between $60-65 weekly for me as this is why i try to drive conservatively as much as possible. Along with that, all my previous cars were 4 cylinder FWD where i easily would get 32-35 MPGs and a fillup of regular gas would be $40 so i do feel the hurt in the wallet at times.
My best suggestion would be to use ECO mode more often, especially when city driving or lots of stop n go when in traffic. The more highway driving u do, the better MPG's one will get. Also to be light on the accelerator. If you see a red light up ahead few blocks away, take your foot off the gas and coast and then brake slowly to a full stop is something i use.
Its not easy to get good MPG's with this V6 AWD setup but its attainable but you gotta sacrifice some speed and some fun to get it.
Nevertheless, I absolutely do love the 3IS and enjoy driving it EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!

What gas company do you use? Trying to figure out what's the best scenario for myself...i've been more dynamic with my modes...heavy traffic i would stick to ECO, moving traffic and city i would leave on Normal, and S+ on highways. My MPG is hovering at 20 flat. I take the same roads with the same traffic conditions to work everyday and Ive tried driving only on Normal just to gain 0.5 to 1 MPG...weird...Oh I use Sunoco gas mainly since it is easier for me to get to....

Not sure if the octane rating would make much of a difference between 91 and 93, but i use 93 often and rarely put in 91. This is only because most gas stations here in Queens and Long island i go to dont have 91. Its usually 87/89/93.
