Default Updating NAV Map

I have a 2006 IS350 and was thinking of updating my NAV map. I have searched other threads and have seen mention of me losing an override capability? I was wondering what that is. Where and how would I go about doing this and is it worth it at all? I'm not sure which map version I have but I have never upgraded it and it was purchased used.

The 2006 model year cars came with a version of the navigation software with a diagnostic override that enables the ability to enter destinations while driving. Here is a video I found on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLFDvaeT7NA

If you purchase an updated map disc, you will lose that option.

Upgrading involved removing the clock face with the pin tools found in the toolkit, and ejecting swapping in a new DVD.

While I much prefer the look of the nav equipped cars, I virtually never use it for navigation these days. I am a HUGE fan of Waze on my smartphone, with its crowd-sourced real time routing based on traffic, notifications of red light cameras, speed traps and even potholes.

My nav is like that now. I can't enter destinations without the car in park position. Any way I can change that?

If you have an '06 with the original nav disc, just watch the video and follow the steps to override.

If not, there is a hardware mod linked from our FAQ: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-...le-moving.html and https://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-...ng-switch.html

One thing I forgot to mention to Gustavo621 earlier is that a new disc will remove the need to push the "I agree" button after starting the car. To me, this was an enormous improvement.

The removal of the "I agree" button definitely was an improvement over the original maps on the navigation.

I only use the navigation screen to look at roads ahead in areas I'm unfamiliar with. When I do need to use the navigation I usually use Google maps on my phone and have them spit directions over Bluetooth and I just consult the car's navigation to confirm what the phone says. As it is exponentially quicker to input a location or address on the phone than punching it in on a touchscreen.

It's an area of consumer unhappiness that Lexus seems to be deaf to. Such a shame.

Thats exactly what I do, I usually use Google maps on my phone and listen to it tell me where to go, now I'm debating if its worth the price just for the "I Agree" button to me removed lol is there a change to the look of the map at all?

If all you want to do is get rid of the "I agree" button, just buy a used 2 or 3 yr. old disc. It will be an improvement in maps.
Yes, I was shocked at how poor the accuracy of the maps are and how difficult to use. I had updated to a newer set a couple of years ago, and it couldn't correctly route me to the lexus dealer. For what they charge, the maps should at least be up to date, but it didn't know about a bridge a couple of blocks from the dealer that has been there for 10+ years.

Where can I find an old disc?

Besides the removing of the "I agree" button they change the colors of major roads like highways and state roads and how prominent they are. They also add more point of interests (which is rather moot with smartphones loaded with Google).

For me the biggest difference for me was that they updated the map with new roads that finished construction long after my car was manufactured. On my '07 map, it would show me going off road because the bridge that goes over a turnpike was never there when the map was made.
