hey I just randomly read this thread due to the clicking noise but when I saw the video I knew I had this issue before.

I have a 2008 is250 rwd and I experienced the same noise. When driving it would have the same noise. At first i thought it was my axle or a bearing etc. my mechanic explained that the noise meant it was related to the wheel as the rotation of the wheel is causing the clicking. sure enough when we took the rim off it turned out to be a swollen lugnut. The rim shop gave me the wrong lug nut which was meant for spacers. I hope this leads you in the right direction. I would recommend you take it to your local mech. to have it checked out, it could be something as small as this making the noise.

good luck

Yeah but what about the grease around the hub? I think it may be the bearing. How hard is it to install a rear wheel bearing if that's what it is?

^Could very well be. Jack the car up on that side of the car, put stands under it, and with the wheel still attached give it some tugs and try to move it around. Any play? Remove the wheel altogether and by hand turn the hub and feel for the lack of smoothness.

The rear hub are a bit more difficult than the fronts because you will have to remove the half shaft nut, which might call for an impact gun.

Have you tried cleaning the area with the grease and seeing if the boot is torn or being squeezed out of it?

Well i took the car to the tire place, they took the wheel off check it out put it back on the sound went away. They even had 3 mechanics drive it around and they had no clue what could have caused it. Whatever it was it went away. I don't know what in the hell it was. Maybe a loose bolt, rock, or something stuck up inside the caliper or dust shield. The tire place didn't even charge me to look at it, so that's a relief i hope the sound doesn't come back.

I also noticed a lot of corrosion and rust around the calipers and the front part of the engine has some rust and engine has corrosion on it, is that normal for car's that come from NY and NJ or is that a warning sign?

Could have been a loose lug nut; who knows. Glad they fixed the issue though FOR FREE!

Well the noise is back after two days, how weird....I took it to the shop and they said they didn't know what it was. However there's grease all around the hub, how could they not notice that? I'm still thinking it's a bearing or axle, the grease is all over the inside of the hub, would a bearing throw out that much grease or would the axle throw out all that grease? This is starting to make me aggrivated.

More than likely it is an axle; I've not seen a 2IS wheel bearing go bad AND throw grease like that.

Will the rear axle have to be replace or will just the boot need to be replaced? How much is the cost to fix the axle? Would it be cheaper to take it somewhere else besides the dealer? If so what brand axle and where can i buy the parts to save money?

^The dealer only offers to replace the entire half shaft; they don't do just boot replacements. An independent shop might take on the task of replacing just the boot though.

But honestly, if I was in your shoes, I'd find a good used replacement and DIY install it.

I believe Auto Zone still offers lifetime warranties on their reman axles; I'd go that route.
