High Mileage IS350s Common Problems?
Im trying to decide if I should buy an extended warranty for 1 year through lexus on the 2007 with 40k miles I just bought.
Can you guys with higher mileage cars let me know if you have had any problems with your car and how much it cost to repair? Are there any common things that break and are they expensive?
Thanks a lot!

Comon problems on IS350:
-water pump failure probably set you back $800-$1200
-Oil Leak from the timing chain cover. This is BIG one, will set you back $3200-$4200 at the dealer or $2000-$2400 at indie shops. I am actually dealing with this issue on my 2006 IS350 with 106k.

The MPH and RPM needle lighting will fail, some start around 80K. Depends on the amount of use and climate you live in. The cluster can also become noisy when the gauges move.
We can fix all that and even change the colors of the cluster if it happens to you.

Not everyone is capable of DiY. Where do you get the parts for $100? An OEM pump is around $170 online plus gaskets and coolant. The labor is very extensive as you have to remove lot of stuffs just to get to it.
My point to the OP is look out for those things (as he asked). The IS350 is a very good reliable cars; however it will be very expensive to fix if anything go wrong (and they do, just look at the list of recalls).
Who would ever think that Toyota/Lexus designed and built a car that need 24 hours of labor (to completely remove the engine) when the timing chain cover gasket (cost less than $50 for material) starting to leak (which is very common on our cars and the ES350).

I understand this is a wear and tear item. However, there are many cases of premature failures (at early as 30k miles). Also, according to Lexus booklet, this is not an item need to be replaced (just inspect).

I wouldnt. 2006 IS350, 115K miles, all I've done additional to the regular maintenanance, (oil changes, cleaned/replaced filters, spark plugs, brake fluid flush, and coolant replaced) are the recalls. No issues

Again, I have no doubt the majority of our cars are very reliable and could easily go pass 200k miles without major issues. However, the OP asked for common issues with our cars and I would classified those I experienced as major issues.
To the OP- no extended warranty is worth anything until you actually need it

Personally, I'd pass on the extended warranty. Like others said, you can spend that money on routine maintenance items (brake pads/rotors/spark plugs/ filters/etc).
Though definitely not limited to high-mileage 2ISs, definitely keep an eye on the water pump; mine was documented to have "gone out" at 27k miles. Other failures, though not common :
-Transmission solenoid or the trans itself
-NAV screen failure (happened to me; had the unit replaced out of pocket)
-Timing cover oil leaks
-HID ballasts failing
-Wheel bearings
-Various interior noises/creaks/cracking/etc
But honestly, with 40k miles, you'll really not have to worry about anything for quite a while.
Enjoy!
