Default Question for the Car Painters

I had a question for anyone here who has professional experience with Painting Cars/Car parts.

When I buy my new front lip, is there an easy way to get ahold of my factory IS Obsidian Black paint, and have my buddy, who is a professional commercial building painter, paint the part? He uses a sprayer for his jobs, and i was wondering if he could paint my part, because I know he would do it for cheap.
If so, what would be the process? how many coats, and will he have to spray on anything besides just the paint? My 2006 IS does not have a clear coat, so I assume he will just need to apply a few coats of the factory paint.

Thanks!

I have purchased most of my factory-matched paint from paintscratch.com. Always spot on color match.

How can you not have a clear coat?

Thanks Gville, ill check it out.

I was told by the stealership that my IS, so at least the 2006 models, do not have a clearcoat. Hench the millions of tiny little scratches all over the car that you only notice when the sun is shining on it. Correct me if im wrong though.

Your 06 IS most likely does have a clearcoat. The tiny scratches you're talking about are swirls (light scratches) in the clearcoat that are evident only from certain angles. If you want to get those swirls out, check out some detailiing forums, or bring it to a professional. GL!

It's gotta have clear. I had an 06' and it was glossy. Is your paint glossy? Pay an automotive shop. It'll probably cost $300 painted and installed. You're gambling on this one. Your buddy is probably an excellent painter but I'd play it safe rather than cheap.

Your IS is clear coated, whoever told you that doesn't know what they're talking about. You can't buy factory paint. The manufacturers give what they call "standards" of the paint that they use to the paint companies like PPG, Dupont, BASF, Etc.. and then they develop formulas for their different paint lines. Obsidian isn't a straight black it does have some toners in it, but match really shouldn't be an issue for you.

It's not going to be worth it to get your buddy to spray it. You couldn't by sealer, base, clear, hardener, and reducer in small enough quanities to offset the cost of paying a shop to do it. That's assuming the part doesn't come in raw plastic in which case more products would be needed. Even if the spray equipment he uses can atomize automotive paint properly the effect would likely be on par with brushing your teeth using a pressure washer.
