To answer your quesion..no, it would not have to be completely removed from the engine bay.

What makes you think you have a bad HG?

Don't have to take the engine out of the car completely, but the block does have to be dismantled.

^I've not ever had to pull a motor out of a Lexus before, not I'd image that IF you only have a bad HG you would ONLY need to remove the head(s) and the front timing accessories. What do you mean by "the block does have to be dismantled?" The block usually refers to ONLY the portion of the engine containing the crankshaft/pistons/rods/etc...not the heads.

Sorry to be technical, but you sorta have to with motors.

Hi thanks for replys , engines over heating, blowing water out of header tank, cooling system pressure tested OK, no visible signs of leaks.
Tried removing the front timing casing to remove chain. but sump is bolted and bonded to bottom of casing, in order to remove sump the front sub frame and steering rack looks like it would have to be removed which looks like a big job , was thinking maybe it would have been easier to remove engine.
Just wonder if anyone out there had done job before and could shed some light on it thanks
