Final Verdict: Sorry for the delay. I had kidney stones, so playing with my tires wasn't at the top of my list. ;-) Although an abrasive rag and various cleaners didn't solve the problem, steel wool did. I actually found a magic eraser worked even better.
I haven't checked on the dates of my tires, but thought I would let everyone know the resolution because I honestly thought it was a defect.

I used a rag and various cleaners and none of them did the trick (despite scrubbing so hard my arm almost fell off), which is why I was convinced it was a defect...but steel wool and the magic eraser worked wonders. You are right those magic erasers are the bomb. I should just start carrying one with me all the time. :-)
