knee airbag/harness question
had an issue the other day where i noticed engine coolant all over the garage. anyway, i took the car in and it ended up being the water pump. however, upon pickup i noticed that the airbag light was on.
my question is do they need to touch anything under the dash to replace the waterpump? i'm guessing no, but they diagnosed it as the driver's knee air bag harness being cut and blamed it on the laser shifter kit (wiring) that i had put in. thye said it has been rubbing and putting tension on that harness damaging the wire.
they quoted me 3k for a new harness which i think is a bunch of crap. i've searced, but have not found too much on the knee airbag. there seems to be a TSIB on the older IS model but not 2008+
anyone elase with a knee airbag issue or know anything about this?

If the airbag harness has been damaged the only allowable repair is replacement of the wiring harness assembly. Repairing the harness is not allowed.
TSB - L-TT-0013-10
They are only following proper published procedures to ensure system integrity and minimize liability.
Unfortunately the airbag harness is most likely part of the entire under dash harness.
As a technician working on this vehicle I would definately NOT repair the harness, replace only.

Here's why that harness is so expensive, it includes almost every wire that runs behind your dash. I got intermittent SRS codes after doing my custom stereo install. I was able to diagnose it to either the harness, or the knee airbag unit itself. I immediately suspected the harness, as this never occurred until after the install. The light was intermittent, and then never came back on, so I suppose I got lucky. I did some digging for the harness, but found that it is incredible expensive everywhere I looked. Labor to replace it would obviously be high, as it such an in depth repair.

All 2006 2007 Lexus IS@) (all ISX50) have defective airbag harnesses and are expected to fail. No airbags will work, seat belts won't work either. Just keep commiserating with each other, don't file a complaint with NHSTA cause they might demand a recall and you'll have nothing to talk to each other about.
You are driving a car with non functioning airbags & seatbelts. Pass me another beer.

Others available.
Still, a complaint about this defect should be filed w/ NHSTA.
