Most automakers have some sort of prototype/concept ready one year from production so if the new IS would go to production in the fall of 05 then the timing is about right.

The location and time might be right but the model is not. It will be IS250/300.

It makes no sense to use the 245HP 3.0L V6 in the GS and not use it in the IS. And for the same reason that they won't use the 3.3 out of the Camry/RX they won't use the 3.5 out of the Avalon either.

Well, that's what we've heard from a dealer posting here:
from THIS THREAD
Okay all you hardcore Lexus fans and devotees. Our Vice President and General Sales Manager just returned from Washington DC, where the Lexus dealer meeting was held and I got the new information, just like I promised I would. Here it is:
First up is the new 2006 GS300 and 2006 GS430, coming March of 2005. They saw the new ones in person and say the new body style is HOT.
Next is the RX400H Hybrid coming in April 2005. There will be a guarranteed 2000 per month national production, but they are trying to up that right now. Lexus factory is keeping track of orders, something they've never done before. It's a good thing, so they can see the high demand and what regions are selling better than others.
Then next year is the new IS250 and IS350. A 2.5 cylinder sedan with a more reasonable price point and a brand new sedan with more than 300 horsepower. The following year will bring the AWD version. And, of course, my personal favorite, the IS convertible. The LF-C is coming 2 years from now and will be a targa and a speedster. . . . . . .

It doesn't make sense and is frustrating that Lexus will put a 3.0L V6 in the GS while the IS gets a 3.5L. We will have the 3.0 in the GS, 3.3 in the ES, and 3.5 in the IS. Why not just put the 3.5 in all of them

Most likely AWD for the 2.5L version the 4GR-FSE like it's JDM Mark X counterpart.

the 3.5L Avalon engine is just a shorter stroke version of Toyota's new Tacoma/4runner/Tundra 4.0L V6.
I'm thinking it has something to do with fitting in the awd transfercase, or something like that. Unlike the RX330/Highlander transversly mounted awd setups, the GS engines will be mounted longitudinally.
The IS could use an awd option, but that really isn't necessary.

Even here in VA it comes in handy sometimes.
