Need help with CA tail light laws?
I have an 03 IS300 and today someone backed up into me and broke one of my tail lights. I am obviously looking for replacements when I came upon aftermarket red smoked taillights and I was wondering if anyone knows if red smoked taillights are legal in CA? I know murdered out lights are illegal and I don't like them imo but I do like the red smoke tint. Thanks

Smoked tail lights
Bought a pair of smoked tail lights for our BMW 5 series, less than 24 hrs I was pulled over by CHP for these tail lights the officer said to remove the "tint" of the lights and gave me a warning, took off the smoked lights and got clear lamps, no tail lamp issues after that.

You definitely need red reflectors on the rear and the output should be able to be seen in direct sunlight. You can get JDM units like mine. The housing is smoked, but the circles are still red and have reflectors.

I thought he was talking like these:

In which case, YES, you can have these in CA. General Rules are they have to be red, reverse has to be white, and visible during the day. The turn signal is also left clear because they have to blink yellow or red. Frankly a red buld will look stupid IMO.
