new - few questions
Hey im new here, I have had my IS since October 2012...
I have a 2001 Is300. Last week my engine started knocking pretty bad. Took it home on a tow truck. Found out my #3 piston or rod was the culprit. Moves up and down fine, just has a little play when it gets to the top of its stroke sounds like the piston pin is bent or something. I have been trying to hunt down some GTE internals, but they are all over 900 bucks just for pistons and rods. Is there another alternative I could go for? I dont plan on boosting the car right now maybe in a year or so. I just need it back up and running. Thanks!

Supraforums... search on there man, there are people selling pistons and rods out of a GTE all day long (for a couple hundred or less)...
you can get fully forged everything for $1200... GTE internals wouldn't be wise though if you aren't planning on turbo'ing it as the compression ratio would be quite a bit lower, decreasing off boost (all the time in your case) power.... now, if you do plan on boosting it, it would at least be drivable for a while that way...
another good option would be pistons and rods out of an early GE (non-VVTI) motor - they will be higher compression and also quite a bit stronger than the factory VVTI stuff...
Aside from either of those, sourcing a good working short or long block may be the way to go...

ah ok, yea I tried searching and have found so many variables. So on my stock motor could I get away with putting GTE rods/pistons in and use the same stock GE stuff (i.e. Headgasket, main bearings, etc)
I start my flight school in a few weeks so I gotta get it asap lol.

I managed to get my hands on 6 used pistons/rods. However cleaning them the 2nd set from the top rings broke and are broken. They have cleaned up pretty good with a little dish soap, degreaser and a brilio pad. Should I worry about cleaning the rod? so far I have got the piston a brilliant shine.
I pulled mine in the block and they all look fine except the one making the click noise. So I figured I would clean all of them and get new bearings and bolts along with rings. Don't know what im gonna do with the 5 rods/pistons.
