Default Third brake light problems

So I have had that pesky taillight warning light on my dash since I got the car almost two years ago, and never really thought anything of it. Last week, a buddy tells me I have a main brake light out, so I have him check the third light, and of course that is out. So I get motivated and replace all bulbs on the back half of the car.

The short story is, third brake light is still out, even with the new bulb AND that pesky warning light is still there (of course). Has anyone else had this issue, and can anyone help me with what to check? I just want my dash with no lights, and all lights to work.

thanks for the tip, after switching fuses, I thought the problem was fixed. Dash light is off, success! actually not... As soon as I hit the brake pedal, it tripped the warning light again...

same thing happened to me too...it ultimately was this:

1. Open the trunk and remove the trunk liner on the drivers side.
2. There is a vertical sheetmetal support that several wire stalks are connected to.
3. Find the light failure module. It is gray and is on the backside of the sheetmetal where you cannot see it. Undo it and pull it towards the front.
4. Find pin #4 which is violet / green. You can cut this wire and tape it up....or if you are a saavy person you can pull the pin out of the socket and tape that up.

At this point the warning light should not show up on your dashboard and your tail lights should function as normal.
