From what I can tell the progression of the IS here in the states is as such:

The car has been upgraded by Lexus/Toyota in each of the years in existence. I would say that the best year would be 04 or possibly 05. This does depend on what you are looking for as far as amenities go.

04 because the 05s didn't have lsd available for 5MT cars.

I have an 05' with a stock lsd rear end. I even still have the window sticker that shows the factory option and how much it added to the price of the car.

I have the LSD as well. I do have a question about '05. Was there a sport design available? I do not think that there was because of the parts that I have on my car from the dealer. I have some sport design parts with no sport design badging. If there was a sport design then someone just switched wheels on me.

Smooth 1,

I take it you have an automatic. I'm just going by what was on my.is which says LSD wasn't available on the manual tranny cars.

BernieIS,

Your's sounds like an anomaly for a 5MT 05 with LSD.

Sport design cars came in Alabaster, Thundercloud Metallic and Black Onyx. They also have all leather seats, no alcantara. Nowhere does it say that it came in Red. I've only seen one, a TCM with sport design badges.

Maxnine,

In your op, you didn't say for manual or auto, you just said no lsd available for 05. I don't know that they did or did not have lsd on manual tranny options.

I have in my car every available option, to my knowledge except navigation.

-Full Leather
-5MT
-LSD
-Sport Design wheels
-Trunk spoiler
-The area where the nav is has a covered tray that works similar to how the nav does

I am sure that there are other things as well.

I would think that knowing they were completely redesigning the model for 2006 that they started throwing extra parts on cars as they were building them. One of the reasons I have the Sport Design wheels and the LSD

Smooth,

Sorry for the confusion. Should have stated it was for manual tranny cars. I've edited earlier post.

Bernie,

Here's more info from a stickie on the other site:

How to tell if my IS300 has LSD?
Look at the sticker on your driver door sill/jamb, look for the area that reads "A/TM"
You'll see numbers such as B02A, B02B, B02C
A=no LSD
B,C = LSD
If you are still unsure, call 1800 25 LEXUS and ask them to look up your VIN and they can tell you what options it came equipped it from the factory.

If you bought your car second hand, there is a possibility the owner of a non-LSD IS300 swapped in a factory LSD, if this is not disclosed, it makes things a bit more challenging.

Here are pics and info on how to distinguish the two by looking at the gears;

I have the covered tray and rear spoiler on my car.

List of Sport Design specific changes:
11-spoke wheels, SD grill, Black Pearl emblems, smoked fogs, head and tail lights, SD exhaust, full leather interior

Then I definitely have the bastard child of the IS300 family.
