IS300 makes clunk clunk sound when wheels turned all the way at slow or 0 mph
Hey guys:
My firend's IS300 makes a weird clunk sound (not like when you need new CV boots) when she turns the steering all the way, mostly at very very slow speed or backing out of a parking spot.
just wanted to check with the Experts here and make sure its not an Issue with the IS300.
She has been to the Dealer and they couldnt duplicate the problem..I just checked myself and was able to hear ot right away...
Car is a 2002 with 24K..still under warranty..
.
Thank you for your help.....

Check to see if there's power steering fluid in the reservoir. And check to see nothing from the wheelwell is touching the wheel when it's turned.

If she has her foot on the brake then its more than likely the brakes. All IS3's do it. Its just the kind of brakes we have. I hate it but thats what you get when you have high performance brakes. Hope this helps.

A defect in the steering rack can make clunking noises in the steering at slow speeds or at a stop (Some Chrysler products used to be notorious for this).....but usually with a defect in the rack, you will feel the clunk as well as hear it.
If you only get the sound when you touch first the brake pedal after changing direction forwards or backwards, then that is most likely the infamous Toyota / Lexus "Thunk" or "Tap" from the pad assemblies moving slightly with a change in rotor direction and then hitting their stops. It is perfectly normal in many Toyota / Lexus products and nothing to worry about.
