My front brakes need pads, and the dealer wants to put on new rotors as well. Total cost $1000. What is your experience in replacing pads and leaving the rotors, if they are not worn? Dealer says cross-drilled rotors get glazed and are thin, need to be replaced with the pads. That's $2000 for front and rear together. I would much rather order pads and replace them myself, would that be a mistake?

stealership at it's best right there!!!!!!! wow! check sewell lexus(a vendor here) for pricing and have someone else put them on. you can also go aftermarket with the rotors & pads. I went with stoptech rotors and project Mu pads. very happy and cost about a grand installed!

If the rotors are not scoured and are within tolerance, use 'em. After your pad install, don't forget to bed them in properly.

DIY all the way... there's of course a DIY post on it, just use the search function... but measure the thickness of the rotors w/ a micrometer and make sure they are still w/in spec... if u don't have one, auto chain shops like sears and pepboys usually have a special where they will do a free "inspection" of your brake components... now if you trust them is another story so i would try and find a micrometer and DIY...

Slightly off topic, but here goes.....any harm in keeping slightly used (4k miles) Project Mu pads and putting them on new rotors?? I need to replace my front rotors soon but really don't want to junk the pads since they are fairly new.

Bill, I bought the rotors and pads at sewell and went to pep boys for installation. Cost me $115 for my rears and the same for the front. Your the one who told me to go to pep boys. Never had a problem with them so far.
