Why I luv the V8

Just read this yesterday. Unfortunately the ever increasing CAFE fuel economy standards will ultimately kill the v8. Just another reason I love my F and will hold onto it for a long time.

Good read!! Not that I took the F and it's V-8 for granted because I didn't, but this reassures why I bought this car and makes me love it a little bit more

The gas economy on this particular V8 is nice for sure. Not having that gas guzzler tax that the competitors had to tack onto their sales price with their V8 variants is pretty sweet as well. Not all V8s are created equally, as we all know, and I am a proud to own this one. It certainly won't beat all the cars out there, but how its packaged and delivered from the factory is a rather terrific car, I'd say. After eight and one-half years of ownership, she still brings a giant grin on my face when I start her up and go for a drive.

Probably the thing I hate most isn't the "quest" for more efficient engines, but when manufacturers "build to the test" without actually improving economy. From what I understand, many believe the CAFE test methodology (drive cycles) is biased towards smaller forced induction engines. Although many larger V8 or V6 engines will have similar or better real world mileage results than their smaller/higher revving engines, this isn't reflected in how CAFE approaches the test design. That is why many of us who have owned other cars, especially turbo cars, never got the mileage that the numbers on the window led us believe we would get. A recent case in point...http://www.edmunds.com/ford/f-150/20...-liter-v8.html. Maybe if the test methodology changes, the V8 can make a comeback! Not likely though considering the packaging benefits that smaller engines offer.

Wow, even 19/20 seems a bit low. I took a road trip this past weekend about 2.5 hours each way through some west MD hills and after about 330 miles with traffic and AC and 2 people and some luggage my avg was still 24.5. I've gotten up to 28-29 easy with no AC and straight shots of an hour or 2. I know it's not what the car is meant for, but it just sips when it's on the highway which is a big daily driver plus. My combined commute avg is is 20-21 though.

Are you bolt on or stock? I have PPE EL headers and dual mode exhaust and the best I can get, with highway driving is 19 mpg, lol. Granted, I'm at 5,300 ft elevation, but I haven't seen over 20 mpg. On the way back from Phoenix where I bought the car, I averaged 22-23 mpg on the highway lol.
