Default getting ripped off on paint ???

So, i made a thread eariler this week on getting an oem side skirt, got the dealer to match the price.

Now they say they can paint it, but it will cost 250$, this is just paint with no installation, and i believe it comes already primed.

car is obsidan black, i talked to one shop and he said, it would only be that expensive if the paint had pearl in it.

but to my knowledge, it is not a pearl paint, and since its only one side skirt the painter wouldn't need anymore than say a quart of paint and clear with minial prep.

It feels like im being taken for a ride, so before i cave in on price i figured i'd ask my CL brethern.

$250 for painting doesn't seem unreasonable. 2 hrs. labor plus materials.

$250 is reasonable. Where do you see that it's already primed?

$250 is a good price for that work.

It does not come already primed. It's plastic, and in it's bare form it looks like plastic.

I was quoted that exact same price on painting an aftermarket front bumper and my car is the exact color as yours. Maybe a front bumper has more to paint than a side skirt? I also live in Toledo so everything's cheaper here because we're poor lol.

Sounds fair. For comparison purposes, when I had my is350 I bought a replica oem spoiler for 70$ but painting it SFP cost $140. Haha.

That actually sounds fair to be honest. I'll give you a general idea what I paid for my WALD style spoiler to be painted, it was $200 since it was SFP but he gave me a hook up price on it since we're in the same car club. Otherwise it would probably be $300+ for a spoiler especially for SFP. My WALD style spoiler was cheaper than the paint job, it was only $150 lol. He also only paint matched a small scuff on the rear of my bumper, $450.

so after calling around to a few shops, i made my last call to yelp's highest rated autobody shop in my city....figured they would be the highest priced .. low and behold.

final price .... 110$ to paint, will be spraying sherwin williams clear, will bake when finished.

lifetime warranty on the work, will install the part for another 45$

lexus was gonna bill me labor at 140$ an hour, to install the part, and the body shop says its not mechanical so its a rip to pay the rate for mechanical service.

standard autobody rate here is 45/hr.

on the paint he says any shop with a dupont or sherwin williams system should be on the cheap side, and since the paint has no pearl in it, there is no way the price should be anywhere near 200+ for just paint.

he says he could understand if a shop were doing both skirts, but for one it would be silly. now i'm a bit of a paint guy, but its been awhile (years) since i sprayed a gun, but i knew i wasn't losing it ... 250 is too damn high.

the other shops i called all quoted below 200 but nowhere near this guy at 110 .. 2nd lowest price i got was 140 for paint ppg clear.

i asked why it was cheap his response, 212 paint code is often used, they have plenty of it, he said its not like they have to order the paint in and have a bunch left over.
