Concrete all depends on the lift. All the industrial lifts require minimum 6" pour. If you don't specify this when your house is built, you will get 4". I was looking at cutting square holes and digging down to pour in footings for a lift. It was looking like a really big PITA. If you are OK with a 48" maximum height lift, there is a two post hydraulic unit intended for DIY use that bolts to a 4" floor - just drill, install threaded inserts and bolt the lift down when you need it, move it out of the way when you don't. http://www.maxjaxusa.com/

This is the lift I intend to install. While I have a lot of room between the bays in my garage, putting a permanent lift in place would really limit opening car doors in all three bays. The other upside is, I can put bolt holes in all three bays so the lift can go where it is needed.

Thanks for the link & info, Lobux, you da man. 48" will be more than enough for me to drop motors out of my mr2's.

If you have a Post Tension slab, I would be very leery of the just "just drill" approach.

I know that the slab in the home I'm currently moving into is not the Post Tension type, and that it's only 4" deep.

It's also less than 10 yrs. old, unlike the 50+ y/o slab where I live now. I'd never trust just drilling & bolting into that one.

Lots and lots of discussion on this point in some of the garage forums where they talk about this lift. My home does not employ post tension in the foundation (not a slab) or the slab for the garage. This is the most lengthy and technical web forum discussion of this lift and its mounting.
