Drop in Filter
#2
AFE and Toms seem to be the most common preference when replacing the filter. I personally went with Toms because the AFE was not available at the time when I was looking one.

My wife was nice enough to get me the Tom's for Christmas, though it didn't ship soon enough to make it under the tree. It is on the way from Japan and I can't wait to put it in. She also ordered the JoeZ pipe, which should be here in a day or so.
The reason that I got that combination is due to the number of people on the forum that either have or recommended those.

Correct. I have the Joe -Z Intake right now on the stock air box . It works well. I upgraded to the Takeda cold air ram but i havent installed it yet simply because i wont be able to sell the Joe-Z intake when i pull it out. I had to drill it for the NoS nozzle.

I've only 'heard' that it'll mess up the MAF... no first hand.. or seen in person.. as for mine.. no warning lights or problems with performance... only warning light I got is the TPMS since I got my new wheels..

When I had my JoeZ intake, I used a K&N. I never had an issue with my MAF. When you reoil, you just have to be very careful and not over oil. Also, it's best to let it sit overnight and drain before it's reinstalled in the car.

I would stay away from K&N. I had problems with a drop-in on a previous car that I owned many years ago. Poor idling and other nonsense. I did reoil the filter, but didn't think I used too much. I followed the instructions and waited a few days before putting it back in. I even bought a new K&N thinking that I ruined the first one. In the end, I went back to the OEM filter. Also, K&N filters are not as clean as normal filters. They'll tell you that its filters will trap dirt down to 1 microns or some thing. What they won't tell you is that it'll also let in dirt that's much larger in size. Yeah, it has higher airflow, but it's also dirtier.
Maybe I got unlucky with mine. Who knows. I'm sure many people will have a better experience with it. It's like when many BMW buyers hate their cars because of the maintenance and repair issues and swear never to buy another one, while others have no problems and love them. But, we all know that BMW's reliability sucks. That's how I feel about K&N.
