Did I get ripped off on brakes?
Hey guys,
i recently dropped off my car at the mechanic who charged me the following. (I can still talk him down because I haven't paid yet)
Car: 2014 IS250 F-sport
TOTAL: $400
$65 - full synthetic oil change
$180 - 2 rotors (fronts)
$155 - labor?
Some background info:
I brought in my own akebono 1178 brakes for him to put on and paid about $75
My mechanic said My rotors on the front can't be resurfaced (is that true?) there's been squeaking noises about 5 months ago but I assumed it was because the brakes were cold (read that from other posts) initially it was when I was backing out of my drive way, but then squeaking noises started happening at the end of my braking (ex. Red light)
Anyways I wanted to see if I got the short end of the stick on this one or if it really is a good deal.
Thanks!

Hard to say without seeing them (or being able to measure the damage). If the noise was in fact your wear indicators that were actually rubbing your rotors for 5 months, then sure i could see the rotors needing to be replaced.
I would get your old rotors back after the job is done and if they lied to you and they're still good, then just resurface them and store them away until the next time you need a rotor change.
$155 labor charge isn't bad...that's probably 1.5-2 hrs of labor which sounds about right for an oil change + brake pads + rotors.

From what I've read here and my experience working on my cars myself you weren't really ripped off. But could have maybe saved a few bucks turning the rotors, but it is really not worth your time. Just change them and take the old ones to a recycler. It takes about 2 hours to do the brakes and oil change.

That is definitely a fair price, there are always cheaper alternatives but if they did a good job its worth it. Especially since brakes are one of those things you definitely don't want to skimp on... and Corrado is right at a dealership it would have been about double, you got a good price.
