Flashing CEL, TRAC OFF, Engine Shaking, Bad smell from exhaust
Hi Club Lexus members,
I have a 2014 IS350 with about 31,000kms. Everything's been good so far, up until yesterday. Drove out to get some groceries and as I reached the store I noticed a change in my exhaust sound, kind of like sputtering. I looked down at the dash and noticed the CEL was flashing so I parked the car. Went inside and did some searching on the forum, but nothing really came up for the 3IS's. About an hour later went back and started up the car, it sounded as if it was going to stall, a really rough, weak start up with a noticeable metallic bang sound under the hood. I let the car idle for a couple of minutes and felt the engine shaking a little, and there was a pretty bad smell coming from the exhaust. I turned off the car, and back on again and the CEL was solid so I decided to drive it home (about 5 km) and the CEL was flashing again. Noticed the car was definitely lacking power and had an evident repetitive "knock" coming from the engine.
I've decided that I'll be towing the car to the dealership on Friday to get it checked out.
Any ideas as what it could be?
New to the forum, and searched for this problem in the 3IS forum with no luck so I decided to start a thread
Thanks

Plugged or bad catalytic convertor.
Was it a rotten egg smell?
On an old car I had, the substrate inside the cat broke down and rattled around..
Keep us posted.. Let us know what the dealer finds.

Yeah, I'd describe it to be an egg smell.
Will update ASAP on Friday, hopefully my exhaust doesn't cause any problems

Yeah the rotten egg smell is a dead give away of a plugged/bad catalytic converter.
I doubt they would blame your exhaust. Hard to say that an aftermarket exhaust would cause a catalytic to fail. Usually things like unburnt fuel would do it, but in my case when it happened to me, the tech said sometimes you just get a dud. The rattling noise was very loud for me.
Anyway, keep us posted so people can reference this if it happens to someone else.

Most of the time when the CEL is flashing, its misfiring which is allowing unburned fuel to go into the cat. You shouldn't have driven it because it can damage your cat and cause the rotten egg smell.

Got the car towed on Friday night, they pulled codes and told me there was misfires in cylinders 2, 4, and 6. They are unsure of what may have cause it and told me they just needed time to find out.
But for now, I'm driving a 2016 IS300!

Just got an update from the service department, they think its the fuel injectors. They will be updating me when the parts come in from Kentucky in a week or so.

Hey everyone, she's home!
So fuel injectors 2 and 4 were faulty, they replaced them and it's running perfect again. They said they swapped the fuel injectors around and each cylinder would misfire, so they replaced the faulty ones! They also told me my car was the second 2014 IS that has had this problem at their dealership.

Pole Position
By any chance had you filled the tank shortly before the problems started?

No, they changed the gaskets and injectors for 2 and 4 as those were the actual faulty ones. For the 6th cylinder, they just replaced the gaskets.
Made it sound like all the injectors were faulty. My bad, only 2 and 4.
I can't really remember, I think I filled it all the way and it happened when it was about half, so like 3 days after a full tank. I fill up on 91 octane gas, with 94 from chevron being the highest around here.

Knock on wood!
