Could be the famous Head Gasket?
hello Lexusians, i had to come here to find answers to my problem. i hope you someone can assist. before i came here i went to answers.com and i was advised to change thermostat, which i did. so now i will exaplain as much as i can how my IS 220d behaves:
-when going driving for a while, engine begins to overheat but slowing down seems to calm the temperature down.
-i don't have warm air in the car. even when heating is on, it blows cold air.
-sometimes when i open the bonnet there is coolant splashed everywhere. it looks like it leaks from the overflow and hits the fan belt and goes all over
-when driving around for short periods, there is no overheating.
-i started the engine and reved for a while (about 15 mins) and temperature stayed in the middle and coolant did not go down but if i drive for 30 mins at 80 miles/hour... when i open the bonnet, the coolant will be finished
so i was advised that it is most probably thermostat so i changed it. the heating worked beautifully for a short period of time and back to cold we went. i also read somewhere that maybe bleeding the system is the answer so i did this by opening the radiator cap when engine was cold and left it to run for 5 mins, revving here and there. there was no immediate change but later when i was driving, heating came on for a short while then went again.
the mechanic who changed the thermostat for me advised that if goes cold again i should go back with the car and just remove the thermostat altogether as it isn't as necessary. so now im stuck.
help please?
the car is Lexus IS 220d 2006. 114000 miles

this could just be a radiator cap issue. I've seen it many times before. if you can have it pressure tested i would try that otherwise i think its only like 20-30 bucks for a radiator cap. and if you get a new one get an oem cap. the aftermarket ones are garbage
