Default My first Autocross

Anyway, did my first auto-x last Thursday. What a lot of FUN! They had called for Thundershowers all day, so we were lucky we didn't get rained on. You can hear the wind in the video. This clip was a fun run. It was getting dark especially with the clouds so the quality is not the best. Also there is no stopping gate and they weren't timing the runs for the fun runs. Apparently the wind was causing a lot of problems with the timing equipment. You can hear it in the video. I'll have to tie down that camera strap next time.

You can see I need to work on my line. I also tend to brake too early and too much because I don't quite trust what I'm doing yet. That didn't stop me from going off the track on my 3rd run though. I went off at the 180+ degree turn furthest away from the start and end points, just before the two long straights. This fun run was better than any of my counting runs.

My times weren't that great. I finished about 2/3 of the way down the list in raw times. I was pretty close to the bottom of my category. That is partly because the 9 1/2" rear rims, stiffer than stock springs on my coilovers, and my ATS LSD put me in a category with people who know what they are doing.

This is about as close to a "road course" as this club gets. I had gone to the previous event to see what it was like, and it was all slalom and fairly tight turns. Times for the leaders were ~53 seconds for this event and ~63 in the last event.

Can't wait for the next event!

I've never done an auto-x on an actual road course track surface. Lucky you!

Doesn't look that at all; it just takes time learning what your car can do and with the very limited track time learning the course, it's to be expected.

So what class do you end up in?

STU -- Street Touring? I placed myself based on someones spreadsheet. Next time I'll actually ask someone if they know based on my mods If they DQ'd me for every run because I'd messed up, I'd still have had a great time!

Are you referring to the track? We of course were only on a part of it... Less than 1/2???? I'm not sure. I think the venue mostly gets rented out to clubs. The one indy car event they hold in Edmonton (which is in danger of being yanked if it hasn't been already) is not held at this track. They run it at the municipal airport. Castrol is still a LOT nicer than the street. No unexpected bumps or potholes and a consistent surface.

^Exactly, that's why you're there...to have a great time! So don't worry so much about the time, and just enjoy yourself and the car's abilities. But do keep track of your errors and work on correcting them going forward.

You need a cardboard front splitter!
